With 48 hours left, is D missing any colleges?

As the Jan 1 deadline looms, D just asked "mom, is there anywhere else i should apply?" here's where she is:

33 ACT
4.0 UW
3/300 rank.

Current schools:
2 state universities -- in
georgetown - deferred
uchicago - in (though we are not going to be able to afford it so this acceptance is wonderful but not realistic)
northeastern - in (with merit aid)
unc-chapel hill - waiting
vanderbilt - waiting
upenn - waiting
boston college - waiting (made it through 1st round of trustees scholarship)
tufts - waiting
umass amherst -- waiting

Right now, the state universities look the most realistic...we're a donut-hole family...we make too much for financial aid but not enough to pay for college....so merit aid is highly desirable.....but i know D would love to have one or two more options than the state universities down the street....

International Relations.
prefers urban areas.

but open to all right now.

Here’s how much time is left.

<a href=“Countdown Timer – Countdown to Jan 1, 2015 11:00 pm in New York”>Countdown Timer – Countdown to Jan 1, 2015 11:00 pm in New York;

Much more than 48 hours lol

Maybe try Rice University?

She likely could qualify for merit aid at Fordham (NYC) or Tulane (New Orleans) if those sound like options which may be preferable to your state u.

University of Rochester. Trying hard to convince my D to apply but she just doesn’t “get” the school, feels no connection with it. D is also applying to UMass (waiting), NEU (in) and Tufts (RD).

U of R would be a decent alternative to Tufts if your D doesn’t get in. Rochester is “urban” but a strange mix of poverty/crime and wholesome family values. I like the city but it is more than a little grimy and rough in areas.

lOL…okay @sweetcomundrum you’re right! There are 72 hours left…and i shouldn’t take any of those hours away from us!

I was also going to suggest U of R. She is likely to get merit there. And I too couldn’t convince my D to apply there. But I think it’s a terrific school. I think their deadline is 1/5. Brandeis is another option. Their deadline is 1/1.

The University of Denver is urban and strong in IR. Previous posts indicate merit aid awards of $10-20,000 a year, but it is still expensive.

Wellesley. Heck, go for it. (Your D will probably knock my D out of the running!) Also, something in NYC and something ELSE in DC. I mean, International Relations!

It’s too late to apply to Tulane if you need merit aid there. What about American University?

Surprised at the list - if you can’t afford UChicago - you will have issues with many of the other schools. That said - American and George Washington would likely provide a good scholarship package (merit). Both are very strong with IR and I believe there is a relationship among the DC schools that allows students to take classes at other schools (but check - these aren’t schools that were on our radar).

Might look at Holy Cross-January 15th application due date. HC is similar to Gtown and BC all run by the Jesuits. Holy Cross also has some merit scholarships and tremendous alumni network. Holy Cross website is informative.

Two schools to consider - Kenyon and Grinnell, both very good LACs with good merit aid for strong applicants

The deadline for merit at Kenyon has passed.

Wash u St. Louis. Jan 15

If she’s thought about any of the other ivies, she’d prob get a good amount of aid there.

I’d say look at Wheaton College in MA. Its small with a strong political science/international relations program. Although it is in a small town its 20 minutes from Providence RI and about 40 from Boston. She’d definitely get some merit aid too with her stats

Wheaton College and Clark University are two colleges in MA that could be a good fit and offer merit.

Looks like you are already considering Wheaton.

Clark accepts applications up to Jan 15th. It is a tiny research university that is better thought of as a LAC with some small Phd programs. One of the “Colleges That Change Lives” It is located in Worcester which is a city about the size of Providence.
