With an admissions essay opening like this, where should I look

actually,i wanted to see what kind of colleges writers with styles like mine should go to, not commentary on my essay, which was a joke essay i sent to a small conservative christian school

Well, if this is "your writing style," implying that it's your only writing style, you have a lot to learn in terms of writing. A good writer can write in any number of styles, none of them definitively their own unique style because style is so easy to imitate. Voice, on the other hand, can be fairly unique and your own, but since a preferred voice is a personal trait (though most writers can also vary their voice a great deal), one can't really say "what colleges like voices like these."

It is as if you're asking, "what colleges like T-shirts like this one?" Well, we can't say -- the T-shirt doesn't matter as much as the person inside it does.

good writing, dont know if its right for an app essay tho

it was actually voice i was asking. i just edited my post

maybe the right question is good creative writing programs at publics. that shall solve all this mess

I thought it was annoying to read.. all that blahhh in the beginning, whats your point???

remember maybe the right question is good creative writing programs at publics. that shall solve all this mess. no more extraneous talk

U of Iowa has one of the best creative writing programs, but I've been told its more of a grad program.

University of Chicago loves unique essays.

is the grad program at chi for english one of their strengths too? im looking at probably going to a public in the area to start(a&m,ou,ut,ku-looks the best since they gave me the biggest scholarship)

I felt as if I was continuously trying to decode your essay. Make it sharp, easy to understand. Don't use too many metaphors (automobiles = buffalo?????). Feel as though you are oversimplifying. Tell a story.

In all honesty I believe you should drop this essay opening and start fresh.

there is a story, but were past that 25 pages of story wonder. still looking for good creative writing programs at publics

yeah the essay is pretty blah honestly. write about something you know and make it real. whenever i got a topic, i wrote on it in a stream of consciousness form. don't make the essay sound complicated and filled w/ PSAT words. i would throw it away, sit down in a really comfortable place, and write down my thoughts.

yet again still looking for good creative writing programs at publics. not one single school mention other than iowa. plz ive heard enough commentary not enough useful information like good public college creative writing programs

Good Public CW programs: University of Michigan, Bowling Green State University, University of Houston, UVa, UC-Irvine, George Mason, IU, and Pitt

seriously u of houston? neve knew there was a good creative writing school so close to home(i live in dfw)

UH's MFA program is constantly ranked in the top 3, among the likes of Iowa and JHU.

Anything third tier or below?

I don't mean to come off as harsh, but that essay is so full of cliches. It's not too impressive as a standalone piece of writing, let alone an introduction to an admissions essay of all things. You clearly have potential, but I wouldn't submit this without some reworking.

this thread is closed for now. no questions asked.
