My dad keeps whining that with an economics degree at NYU I won't be able to eat and feed myself. What jobs can I get with this degree? Can I go into the big 4 accounting firms?

Why would there be any correlation between a specific degree and job prospects? Work the recruiting office and your personal netowrk, period — whether your major is soc or math or econ or art history. unless your degree is engineering, nursing or actuarial science, there are no guarantees with any major, business included.

I just don’t understand why people think a college degree from a Top 50 school is a guarantee of a comfortable and interesting job… go get what you want… you, not your degree.

If you want a Big 4 accounting firm, why not get a degree in accounting?

Ditto on what DunninLA said.

Your dad is incorrect. Quant-type jobs never go out of style. And, Econ is an extremely strong program at NYU.

Search for summer internships. Besides hard science, econ/biz are still recruiting. Humanities/lit (and “art history”) majors, however…

Are you reffering to Stern econ or arts and science econ?

Starve? Never. As a trained economist you can hold all other conditions constant and assume food.

^^ I like that one.

Econ is a great major for financial analysis and business.

It depends on what kind of job you hold after graduation. An economics degree allows many doors in the job market to be opened to you. Some of them are higher paying then others but I guarantee that you won’t starve so long as you budget correctly. The worst case scenario would be not finding a job in your field and having to resort to retail, food, or factory work, in which case your degree would allow you to fulfill higher positions, which is enough to live modestly.

I hope not.

Or else I’ll be starving with you in four years :)

Also, NYU has some of the best economists teaching there. Yea Nouriel Roubini! I think the Black Swan teaches there too. Yeah, he does - just checked. I think you’ll be fine. Your dad is just worrying becoz it’s such a stressful time.

You won’t starve unless you go on a hunger strike in the dining hall.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q6KAg6qEGY

the video is hysterically funny, btw

Did you get into NYU stern?

If so, then major in finance.

Being an economist is one of the best jobs, requires a lot of math, and doesn’t require any business, finance, or accounting classes.

But if you want to go into accounting then take accounting. If you don’t like math then you won’t like the math-heavy econ classes you’ll have to take at a higher level.

No, I got into NYU CAS econ

[This Week?](http://www.livingthemap.com/Living_the_Map/This_Week/This_Week.html)
This guy isn’t starving, but he wasn’t able to get a job with a USC economics degree before he started this project.
