Withdraw after paying enrolling deposit

I’m a transfer student who already paid the deposit for UMich, but I recently got into NYU also and I’m thinking about attending NYU instead. Can I withdraw my enrollment from UMich?

Yes. The enrollment deposit is not binding…but it is non-refundable.

Thanks!

Not to rain on anyone’s parade or anything, but enrollment deposits are generally supposed to be binding. By paying it, you told the college of your intent to attend and maybe bumped out the possibility of U of M rescuing another transfer student off the waitlist. If NYU is great, then you do you. However, as someone riding on a college waitlist myself (not U of M, but still), it is distressing to hear stories like this. Please, for all others out there, think carefully before choosing where to send your deposit.

Students on the waitlist are notified of their final decisions in middle may or even into June. My decision to notify the university that I won’t attend in the beginning of May will not affect students being waitlisted since students are waitlisted in April. Unless it’s ED, I highly doubt it is binding since Universities understand that sometimes students decide to not attend a university for a variety of reasons.

@kwick1 , almost everyone on a WL will pay a deposit at their favorite school that accepted them. If the WL school offers a spot, they’ll likely take the spot at the WL school, forfeit the first deposit, and make space available at the school where they’d originally accepted for someone on their WL. I know how stressful it is to be on a WL, but what others do and how quickly doesn’t really matter. The dust all settles in the end. Fingers crossed for you that it all works out in the end!

Every university anticipates “summer melt” and builds that into their expected yield.

You seem to have trouble staying committed to one school. Think it through very carefully before making your decision.
