My son was accepted EA to a great school and he just received a likely letter from another one. He will revisit both of these schools in April and then make a decision. He has a third application submitted to a school which is popular among his classmates. He no longer has interest in this third school. Should he withdraw his application to give others at his school a better shot at it?

If financial aid is not a factor for your family, and the decision is really between the EA and the LL schools, then it is fine to withdraw the application at #3. However, if you will need to compare the details of the aid packages, you need to hang in there until you have all the offers on the table.

Withdrawing his application won’t make it easier for any of his classmates to get in. Colleges and universities don’t work that way. Those classmates will be in (or not) based on their own merits, not based on who else applied from their HS.

Happymom

Financial Aid is not a factor.

Something to consider also is that even though it may be true that his application won’t affect his classmates’ decisions, his classmates think it will. So in this case their perception may create tensions in his relationships. I guess he should just check with his GC.

Good idea about the guidance counselor. That person will be able to help him sort through his options.

Good luck with all of this!
