Withdraw from a class I hate unrelated to my major?

I'm currently a sophomore at USC. My GPA from freshman year is 3.63. I've decided to be a business administration major, and I'm also learning Mandarin Chinese (however, this doesn't count as a minor unless I take several additional culture classes, which I may do...) Anyway, over the summer I decided to try out USC's film school because of its wonderful reputation. I enrolled in an introductory course with the intention of exploring the field, and if I really enjoyed the intro class, perhaps pursuing a minor.

Here's the problem- I'm eight weeks into the semester, and have grown to loathe my cinema class. It's NOT that it's a bad class- in fact, many people LOVE it and the professor is engaging. However, for me, it's just so uninteresting. I find it so difficult to sit through four hour lectures+film screenings, and I've fallen very behind in the course. The readings bore me to tears (I don't care about camera angles and lighting and composition and sound design etc...) I understand how people are passionate about this subject, but I am not. And this is not a required General Education or Major course for me, so is it really worse the hassle? So far I've turned in my first paper (which was so challenging for me that I cried over it more than once-- but I think it turned out okay only because I'm a strong writer. Haven't gotten the grade back yet.) There's a midterm next week that I have absolutely no idea how to prepare for, and would probably require me to spend at least 15-20 hours this week watching films and reading texts I'm way behind on.

Obviously I'd rather not spend that much time studying for a subject I have no interest in (+ another paper this semester and the final.) However, if I absolutely HAD to, I think I could probably pull a B in this course. I know that when considering withdrawing, you want to look at whether the tank in GPA would be worth the W instead. But I guess I'm just wondering if it really looks so bad to have a "W" in a class that is unrelated to my major and goals with Mandarin. I'm considering law school; will a W in an intro film class hinder me? What about for future employers? Should I just stick it out, not be lazy, and buckle down for this midterm and my next essay and the final? I'd rather focus on my current business and Chinese classes, all of which I currently have As in.

anyone? Not sure what to do here.

I have no clue what to tell you. I suggest you head to your advisor, or a prof in your major that you have formed a relationship with. Ask them these questions. They are in a better position to advise you on the future implications.

I would say drop the class, but I won’t be suffering any consequences down the road, so you should investigate the impact on your GPA and immediate future.

10 years from now, no one will care if you withdrew from an unrelated class, but don’t know if it impacts grad school, etc.
