withdraw history for transfer student.

I'm currently in CCC for transfer to UC Biochem major.

I have lots of withdraw from my last two semesters.

I dropped my calculus1(5units) class during the summer and I also dropped 12 more units last semester which is total of 17 units.

Would it hurt on my chance of getting in to UCs when I transfer? and I'm considering for dropping another 5-unit class for spring semester.

Since I want to go for medical school, I have to maintain good GPA.

please give me some advices. Thanks

Yes, excessive withdrawls will hurt your chances. You need to have other reasons besides "maintaining a good GPA." i.e., medical, financial, personal...etc.

You will need to put two f/t back-to-back semesters with solid academic performance to overcome this issue. I'd call the adcom of your target schools and get their opinion. Definitely have a back up transfer school.

Every person I know that has transferd from a CCC to a UC or CSU had at least 5 W'S and from what I hear they are completely overlooked.

I hear conflicting opinions on this. Some people say that a W is just as bad as a D or an F. Others say that it's better but still looks bad. Others say it doesn't matter at all. And these opinions come from credible sources like counselors, professors, etc. So I would call an adcom just to make sure. In my opinion though, I would think it looks bad but not as bad as F's or D's and a good GPA and having a lot of good grades and a good app will make them overlook all the W's.

I do have one W as well. :-/

OMG, u dropped 12 units in a semester!? How many units did you finish at last? You might give a bad impression that you can't handle difficult classes.

what do you mean? it'd be similar to me calling and saying, i took a four year break? should i just not apply?

No. I mean asking "So I have 4 withdrawals, will that affect my chances?" The answer is probably yes. The poster is asking CC members if it'll be a huge affect and we here can't answer that, we know it could affect her chances but we won't know how much, only an adcom can be more specific.

med schools are very grades driven. it's better to have several w's and maintain a very high GPA then it is to stick with several classes and get C's or B's. I've personally seen many examples of this. Just makes sure that you get good grades (i.e. A's). Better to focus on a fewer amount of courses and get top grades. I know people who've taken semesters off just to mentally better prepare themselves so they can get back into college and do well. Also, don't continue this trend of dropping classes. It may okay for now but in the final years of your UG experience (especially the last 2 semesters before applying to med school), you don't want to drop anymore courses.

thank G-D that Cornell has such a lenient policy, we can drop a class like 6 weeks into the course without a W

i have until this friday to drop a class when the semester started Jan 21 without a W

cheers
