I'm taking a class right now and I currently have a borderline C/B grade. I can't afford to get a B, let alone a C, so I'm thinking about withdrawing it or failing it so I can retake the class if I get a bomb the next midterm. (This doesn't mean I'm not trying! Heh heh.) The thing is, I don't know which one I should do.

I understand that USC looks at F's and uses them to calculate GPA, too. But say a UC school was my first priority - would it be better to withdraw the class or fail it and retake it? Also, if I did "fail" it, is it better to receive a D or F? Does it matter?

F's don't get erased from transcripts, right? UCs still see these grades but don't take it into GPA account? Please correct me if I'm wrong!

AH I'm so nervous. I really don't want to withdraw or "fail" this class. But it is my own fault. ):

Actually. Not simple.
Because the deadline to withdraw this class has passed.
And you need teacher's permission to withdraw from the class; rumor has it most of the time, teachers won't allow students to withdraw after the deadline.

So, yes. That's why I need to know. ): Because there's a chance my teacher may not let me withdraw.

well the question about whether to get a D or F isnt as simple as it might seem. If you get a D in a class, the admissions office will think that you tried really hard but just fell short because youre not smart enough. But an F gives the impression that something beyond your control mustve happened, (i.e you got mono).

seriously take the W, it means nothing, they look at is as nothing, way better than D or F. There is no way the deadline for dropping the class for a W has passed, most arn't even close until March, April, Mayish.

If you can't get the W, get the F. Like KingInc said, D seems like you actually tried and actually struggled with the subject whereas the meaning of F is... ambiguous. (:

This is premature. Talk to the teacher, most are pretty reasonable. Let him know that you're considering failing the course on purpose just so you can retake it again.

^ i know what you mean. My winter session is ending tomorrow as well and the last day to drop and get a W was last friday. Get an F then ... its true what the other person said, F is more ambiguous

I dont get it, will the UCs even take the class into account? Since its in the spring semester, won't they have already made a decision for admission by the time you are finished with it?
