My son in his second year in a Ivy school. He plans to go to law school after. His GPA around A-. This term, he got a B in his midterm for one of his class. He's thinking withdraw. Question:what's the effect of a "W" on the transcript? Which is worse a B- (possible C) or a W?

You’re kidding, right? He’s going to withdraw from a class just because he got a B and not an A or A-? What’s he going to do if/when he encounters a class that is really tough for him and gets worse, quit that too? Your son should wise up and realize it’s not all about grades, everyone can’t be perfect in everything, and withdrawing from classes costs time and money. Does he feel like overall he is truly learning something in this class? Then he should stick with it, get tutoring, go to office hours, and try to do better, but a B is not terrible.

Withdrawing because of a B would be the stupidest move he can make. It would look truly horrible on his transcript, not because withdraw, but for the reasons he withdraw.
