My son in his second year in a Ivy school. He plans to go to law school after. His GPA around A-. This term, he got a B in his midterm for one of his class. He's thinking withdraw. Question:what's the effect of a "W" on the transcript? Which is worse a B- (possible C) or a W?

A B in a midterm = a C for end of course?

I think a W is worst. A B in a midterm is nothing terrible. In a whole transcript it becomes negligible. What happens if tomorrow he really needs to withdraw because of a really hard class? Will it have a second W in his transcript? Don’t risk it, see what he can do to improve for the rest of the semester.

This has to be a joke.

Not only should he withdraw from the class, he should withdraw from his Ivy and start thinking about whether he prefers asking “do you want fries with that” at McDonald’s or Burger King @@

Get a grip. You can’t be for real.

Posted the same thing to 3 forums. Either someone is hiding under a bridge, or it is the kid.

I’d suggest Chipotle. The food is better.

2015style, you don’t have to pretend you are your parent. You must have been one of the HS students who got A’s without even thinking. Well, welcome to college where you might have to learn some new study skills to try and get A’s.

Your GPA is based on your entire college time, not just one class. If you want A’s to balance out lower grades in harder classes, take some soft classes to balance them.

You might consider reading the book by Cal Newport called How to become a Straight A student. He has several great tips on how to study in college.

On the off-chance that you are serious, I would recommend that you do your best for the rest of the semester and see whether you can bring your grade up to B+ or even A-. It may well be possible. If I saw a W on a transcript, I might imagine that the student’s grade was lower than a B. (Although people do withdraw from courses for many reasons, other than poor grades.)

Believe it or not, MANY people who earn a B (or even - gasp! - a C) in college … even an ivy league college … are successful in life. I know, surprising, right? ;)
