My son in his second year in a Ivy school. He plans to go to law school after. His GPA around A-. This term, he got a B in his midterm for one of his class. He's thinking withdraw. Question:what's the effect of a "W" on the transcript? Which is worse a B- (possible C) or a W?

Why would you assume he’s going to get a B- or C? A single W is not going to matter, assuming it’s not counted in calculating the GPA.

A W is not counted in the law school admissions GPA, so it should have no impact. You can calculate the effect of the B- or C.

why would you assume a B- or C after getting a B on a midterm?

also, you need to ensure that the withdrawal will not be punitive on your record; i believe certain withdrawals will count as F’s on your GPA as calculated by LSDAS.

no effect. LSAC recalculates GPA ignoring Ws. which is obviously better than a C on your transcript. He should withdraw.
