Hi,

Im currently considering withdrawing from all my classes this semester and then trying to transfer or maybe even re-enroll back into the same school. I am doing this because I am going through depression and anxiety that have really made me start to lose my mind. I want to take a semester off to clear my mind and be motivated to go to school and give it 100%. How will other schools view me withdrawing from school only a week into the semester? Is it going to be hard to get into other schools? I currently am a freshman but I started in the summer so I have 23 credits with a 3.12 gpa in college so far. Replies would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Is your depression and anxiety being treated by a professional? If you can provide documentation that your mental health problems severely impacted your ability to attend school then you can file a medical appeal at the end of the semester and possibly have it expunged.

Aren’t you still within the drop period? Classes dropped then will not show up on your transcript.

Anything after that date will. The school I transfered to ask me why and I explained it to them Depression, anxiety, full-time work.

It wasn’t until I started at that school that I had a hypomanic episode followed by full blown depressive episode and had to be hospitalized. I dropped my courses halfway into last semester and won’t be petitioning to have that removed. Honestly, I need a break. I tackled 18 credits, 2 clubs, and greek life 2 weeks after being discharged. I was doing well, but I was also sick for 3 months due to the stress and I knew I had to focus on healing myself properly before anything else.

The con is that I now have to repay 2 semesters of financial aid and tuition instead of just the 1 semester I appealed.

I say just focus on yourself, get treatment, and start taking on classes little by little. Going in 100% like that after mental health problems can be a shock, so go into it gradually as you learn to manage yourself- know what your triggers are academically so they don’t all hit you at once when you start going full time. I know an admissions officer at UM and she says they respect that. It shows maturity. Throwing yourself into it is just stubbornness.

As for whether or not schools care… it depends on the school and the information you’re using to back yourself up.

Hi. I saw your reply on my post and really appreciate it. I am still debating whether to go back or not and I would like to know more about your specific situation (what school you’re at and how far from home you are, what triggers your anxiety, how you feel, etc). I am really going through the exact same thing and it’s so good to be able to talk to people who can directly relate and I want to try and help as best I can–as someone who knows exactly what it’s like firsthand. I am just as close as you are to taking a leave or withdrawing so please–contact me.
