Withdrawing a class

I’m failing a pre-requisite math class and at first I thought “Hey, I can do this!! I could push through this.”. A couple weeks later, I’m doing poorly in class and I already missed the deadline to drop the class. I don’t want to end my 1st semester with a realllly bad grade. I also don’t want a bad grade that will be permanently staying on my transcript because it’ll ruin my GPA. I told my mom the situation I’m in but she keeps insisting that I stay in the class but I don’t want to stay because I’m already failing. (I currently attend community college) Anyone have a similar experience to this? What did you do?

Since it’s too late to drop the class, I have to withdraw the class right? If I withdraw the class, would it harm my GPA or acceptance towards 4 year universities when I try to transfer?? Any advice on withdrawing a class would be great.

When’s the withdrawal deadline? I’d stay in the class for as long as you can before the deadline and then make your decision. In terms of transferring, a W is a lot better on a transcript than a low/failing grade.

  1. Talk to your academic adviser.
  2. Has the withdrawal deadlien passed?
  3. W’s are way way better than a D or F in your GPA.
  4. At some colleges, you have to maintain a certain number of credits to remain full time…not sure if that is an issue.
  5. Read this post and do what it says…keep trying and if you need to Withdraw do so before the deadline.

  6. Talk to your academic adviser…they will know better than your mom.

What is ‘really poorly’ mean? Have you spoken to professor? Have you gone to tutoring center or asked classmates for help? Have you talked with professor? Have you talked with professor? See a pattern here. Sometimes students assume they are dead in the water and they’re not. College teacher friend had a student tank first test in class and never return. She said it was sad since if he had talked with her she could have told him that perfect attendance plus a few other things would have gotten him where he needed to be. Of course check deadlines and academic advisor, but meanwhile - talk to professor!!
