Withdrawing Due to Medical Problems

Situation:

I got clocked in the face last week and will have to have reconstructive surgery in a few days to stick a metal plate in my head. After the surgery I have to stay in the hospital for 2-3 days and will likely be diminished in my capacity to do work for probably another week after that.

I'm taking 18 Units + a job, and I've already fallen behind due to my injury and will fall further behind should I try to keep the same number of units.

From what I read online, I can withdraw from a class at this point while getting a W on my transcript. But what if I decide to withdraw from 2 classes, bringing my unit total down to 10?

This would classify me as a part-time student (as opposed to a full-time student). Does anything change with this distinction? Can I still stay in the dorms?

My tuition was already paid in full this semester through an outside scholarship, so I'm not concerned about getting a tuition refund.

Also, I'm considering taking next semester off to get a chance to recover and recharge, and start fresh in the Fall of '07. Is there anything I should know about this?

I am ofcourse going to see an academic advisor, but I would very much like to know my options before speaking with him/her.

I'd greatly appreciate any help or advice!

From what you're written, it sounds like you're not withdrawing from school but actually reducing the # of classes you're taking due to medical issues. You might want to talk with the Disabilities Office--Dr. Ed Roth there is very nice & could let you know if his office is able to help you. They deal with students whose medical issues are affecting their education and might be very helpful.
Are you in any particular school at USC? You might want to speak with them as well & you may also wish to speak with the outside scholarship folks to be sure they have no problems with your proposed plans. An option that might work if you need to carry a "full load" to maintain your outside scholarship is to see if you could just get an incomplete or "I" for one class & drop another class due to medical reasons. You could make up the "I" when you've recovered from your medical issues (working with the instructor & USC).

I'd see an academic advisor sooner than later--they can be very helpful, especially in situations like yours. Good luck--hope you have a prompt & full recovery. Taking a semester (or even longer) off to fully recover sounds like a very good one.

Thanks for the reply.

I spoke to an advisor on the phone and decided to drop Writing-140. I'll try to grind it out in the rest of my classes, but I still have until November 13th too drop another class if it's too much work.

I talked to my outside scholarship and they've been pretty understanding, so I should be okay with that.

Appreciate the help!

SF:

I'm really sorry for the problems you're having. Consider this though: you have a very, very long life ahead of you. Perhaps it might be best for you to lose a year know, recover your health, and start again in the fall.

Appreciate the words of encouragement.

I got back from the hospital and the surgery went well. I'm hopeful that things settle down a bit now. The ordeal has been pretty exhausting and difficult.

Good luck with everything. Such a hard way to start off your college life. I hope and pray that you feel great soon. I am so sorry that you have to be in this situation, but sounds like you are coping beautifully.
