I've been taking Intro to Programming- Visual Basic 2010, and it has not been at all what I expected. Aside from the class being extremely disorganized (the professor really teaches at another school so this is just a side job for him), the class is very focused on self learning, which for me has become impossible when it comes to coding. On our midterm, I barely passed (73), even though the average wasn't much higher either (76). I talked to my advisor yesterday before I recieved my exam back and she told me to withdraw from the class if I failed the exam, but now I'm torn. This class doesn't count at all towards my major, so I have no idea what to do. Is it better to just withdraw from it now and save my gpa, or try to stick it out? (I'm a freshman btw so this would be my first "and hopefully last" withdrawal)

I failed my first programming class while I was in high school. The professor assumes you have a programming background, and the TA in the help room was a complete a**hole who didn’t really help me at all. But when I retook it in college, I picked it up pretty quickly. But it turns out object oriented programming is completely useless where I’m going, or at least the coding part…

For your situation, I would say definitely drop the class. nobrainer.

If this class does not count toward your major why are you taking it? If you are really worried about your GPA then withdraw. If not then soldier on and get the best grade you can and save those “W’s” on the transcript for more important classes down the road.
