is it a must that applicants accepted through early decision withdraw their applications at other schools? will you get penalized if you don’t?

Read the mail they send you. If they require you to withdraw your application from other schools, they will tell you. There is (I think) a decent chance that you could get away with not doing it even if they require you to, but I wouldn't bet on it!

My humble opinion is that you should withdraw all app

if they find out you didn't withdraw your other apps, they could / would rescind your acceptnace. assuming your ED is binding

It's a courtesy to withdraw all your apps and thus you don't take others' spots.

i can give u lotsa stories, but my brother's best friend he was accepted to Brown ED, did not withdraw UPENN, Stanford, Northwestern, or Rice. Got a letter from Rice that told him his application had been automatically withdrawn, Stanford called him and told him they were not allowed to process his application because he had been accepted ED, UPENN mailed a letter saying if he did not withdraw in 10 days they would inform Brown, and Northwestern also automatically withdrew his application.

So basically, yes they know. dont think "oh colleges wont know" if you were accepted to a top 25 college under ED, every other top 25 school WILL know. just letting u know. i know many people who did not withdraw and were rejected from all of their schools for this reason
