Withdrawing Spring Quarter - DOs and DON'Ts???

Although I am registered for spring quarter, I am planning on taking it off. Instead, I will be taking summer quarter. Has anyone ever taken a quarter off at the UW. Is there anything important that I should keep in mind? How soon should I drop my spring quarter courses. I have already consulted an adviser and she confirmed that it's okay to take a quarter off. However, I am still concerned how this move will look on my transcript.

How does it work with the husky card? Do I have to return it? Will I be able to use any UW services (library, IMA, writing center,..etc.). Though I am sure U-Pass will be inactive.

btw I'm a junior and winter was my 1st quarter at the UW.

If you are for sure taking this quarter off I would recommend dropping your classes ASAP for two reasons: I THINK you have until April 1st (next Sunday) to drop without tuition charges (please double check and don’t just take my word however), and if you aren’t going to take the classes there may be another student who wants/needs to get into your classes.

You can keep your husky card (you can reuse it when you return for summer). You won’t have UPass, IMA, or check-out/remote database privileges at the libraries. I am not sure about writing centers.

If you are really worried about how this will “look” to those who review your transcripts, I am sure you probably have a reason for doing that you could always explain if asked. But I don’t think it would really be viewed as negative. But just have an answer ready for interviews so you aren’t caught off guard in case someone is curious.

Is this Frosty? If so, text me man.

You have a week to drop all your classes without a penalty.

What SarSarHanHan said is right.

However, since you’re taking summer instead of spring quarter, I don’t think you should worry too much about taking an ‘abnormal’ school year. A friend of mine skips all winter quarters and instead does Fall->Spring->Summer->Fall…etc since she is a snowboarding instructor. This is perfectly fine as well; she had no trouble getting jobs and also got a summer internship at a very respectable place (she scaled back her snowboarding classes and did a traditional 3 quarters for once).

Thank you for your responses! It helped a lot!
