Hello, I’m a senior and I’m currently applying to colleges. However, I’m going though a difficult situation. I’ve already read through numerous pages and articles on admissions sites, talked to my guidance counselor, and emailed a couple admission officers about my problem. The high school I go to is on a community college campus and all of my courses are dual enrollment level courses. It’s been pretty hectic this semester because of college applications and everything else going on and I’m thinking about withdrawing from one of the classes I am currently in. Im only having problems in calculus, its because I have a very hard professor, and I know I will do better if I take it again next semester. How will a W on my transcript affect my chances of getting accepted into Schools? My guidance counselor is absolutely against it, but she says she will support whatever decision I make. She convinced me that schools would think poorly of me and I should take the F grade and retake the class for grade forgiveness. However, I spoke to an admissions counselor today from another University and they said they don’t even look at W’s on transcripts. Would a W on my transcript seriously defer me from getting admitted?
1.) I have a 3.98 unweighted GPA
2.) 5.27 weighted GPA
3.) 1310 SAT
4.) This is my second year of all dual enrollment classes and so far I’ve received straight A’s in all my courses including, college algebra, trigonometry, and pre-cal.My calc teacher is good but she just makes the course extremely hard. I’m also on tract to graduate High school with an AA degree.
5.) I want to go to University of Florida or Florida State University as a computer science major.
What should I do? This is very stressful and the deadline to withdraw is in 3 days!
I would take a W over an F any day.
If you take an W, does it show that you were failing at the time? Look up the rules for your CC.
If you have an F, it would be calculated into your GPA. It also shows you are not ready for calculus.
If you have a W, it won’t be in your GPA.It also shows you are probably not ready for calculus…but you have ave shown you are ready for college classes because you have done well in your other classes. One W is fine.
How are you doing in calculus? Does having trouble problems in the class mean you are getting a B or failing the course? Withdrawing is better than a F or a D.
I currently have an F in the class. I understand the concepts to an extent but the tests are killing me. If I take the W it does not show that I was failing, it only shows a W. if I fail with a D or an F they give the option to retake the course next semester. I’m applying to schools right now and my guidance counselor says that they schools won’t necessarily see my bad grade until the summer time when I’m accepted. If they see that I failed and retook it they might not take back my admission. She also said if I take the W they will see immediately. The choice is mine
No. There is nothing to explain. You are doing poorly in the class. Complaining about a hard teacher will make you seem like a whiner. complaining about the time spent doing applications will make it seem like you don’t manage your time well. If anything I would just say that you decided to move the calculus class in the second semester. Anyway that is my advice, you should talk to your advisor as well.
People withdraw from classes for many reasons…my daughter got sick and was in the hospital for a well so she Withdrew from a class because she wouldn’t be able to catch up on all her classes if she was taking 17 credits.
A pattern of W’s over many semesters shows that you have a hard time keeping up.
Colleges most certainly would see a D or F on your transcript. You are going to take the class again anyway if you take a W or if you get an F. Never get an F.
