without either car or driver's license, will UCLA be a place that one can get around to elsewhere, for example a shopping plaza?

Most people here don’t have cars. Westwood, the college town here, has a lot of shops in it. If that doesn’t do it for you it’s 35 cents to take a bus to Santa Monica where there is a ton of shopping. You can also take the bus to other shopping centers around here.

The Big Blue Bus will be 50 cents next year.

But yes, getting around without a car isn’t a problem, as long as you aren’t hoping to go beyond downtown. Then it’s kind of a hassle.

Yeah most people don’t have cars. My brother’s going into his third year and still no car. There’s plenty to do within walking, biking, or busing distance. Of course, if you get bored, you can always befriend someone with a car.

you’ll learn to make friends with people with cars.

but seriously, the bus system can actually take you anywhere…santa monica, downtown, j-town, k-town, rodeo drive, the grove, the getty, getty villa…etc. Just map your route on the orange metro or big blue bus online and you’re set.

There are several shopping malls you can reach via public transportation.

Easiest is Westside Pavillion (big blue bus 12 or 8, takes 10minutes)
Second Easiest is 3rd Street in Santa Monica (big blue bus lines 1,2 etc)

Two more malls you can reach but are harder to get to without a car:
a) Century City Mall: Take a bus down to Santa Monica Blvd, then walk 1.2miles North East.
b) Beverly Center Mall: Several Metro busses can get you here. [Beverly Center: Getting Here](<a href=“Beverly Center | LA's Premier Food, Fashion, and Shopping Destination”>Beverly Center | LA's Premier Food, Fashion, and Shopping Destination)
