we just recieved the new student package today. I am interested in hearing from other parents going to the orientation. It sounds as if you are sort of on your own after the first day (the kids are scheduled elsewhere) I am wondering if it is worth hanging around for Sat.
We are in Ct now but moving to Ca. anyone else from Ca.?

haven't received that yet. when is the orientation?

I'm from California! where are you moving to?

This past year at orientation, we stayed Sat as we are only a 2 hour and 10 minute drive. I think the main thing we accomplished on the second day is that my daughter was able to break away briefly and we made a run to Target to pick up all of the things for the dorm that she forgot to bring. One thing that is really worthwhile seeing--and I forget if it is during Orientation or Family Weekend---is the a capella concert where they gather all of the a capella groups together--it is very entertaining.

thanks dvan, that is exactly what I was asking for. When we dropped my other sons off, it helped to have them spend the night in the dorm and then figure out what else they needed. The orientation material makes it sound as if it will be impossible for you to see them after Fri. the 25th
cm8333, we are moving to orange co. where are you?

mominct, with other sons in college, I guess you are a veteran at this....but I would like to make one other suggestion...especially if your s/d is in Dupont Hall....the beds really required a lot of "coaxing" in order to get them to bunk up...suggest bringing a rubber mallet if there is any inclination to bunk the beds.

you will be able to see your child throughout the weekend, but it will be kinda tough. Orientation is scheduled very tightly.

TJED

freshmen move-in is the 25th of August. Orientation will last until Tuesday (but will be mostly finished on Monday), with classes starting Wednesday, August 30th. W&M is starting later than some other colleges next year to offset graduation from the major Jamestown 2007 (400 years) celebrations. On the schedule of the past 2 years, we would've been starting on the 23rd.

The calenders can be found at http://www.wm.edu/registrar/acad-calendars.php

The W&M Hall A Capella concert is during Family Weekend. For most of the groups, it is the first big concert of the schoo year.

Because groups usually only do 2 songs each, the entertainment level is fairly solid.

thanks, soccerguy. you are a wealth of good information. I appreciate it!

The beds for the most part are all about the same in the freshman dorms, however, if you want them bunked, I believe you can work order them prior to move-in day.
