woahhhhh wait...question on dorming and undergrad colleges

My friend wants to room with me but hes majoring in business where im majoring in comp sci. Im putting information/technology which would put me in mendolsohn. If he puts that down as well, does that mean he can't major in business? Or me vice versa? What is the difference between these undergrad colleges? I dont understand.

Undergraduate colleges have nothing to do with your major. If your friend signs up for ITS, he can still have business as his major, and you can have computer science as your major regardless of your undergraduate college. All they indicate is which quad you live in, and which Intro to Stony Brook courses you take.

Don’t feel compelled to sign up for ITS just because of your major, do some research and decide which quad you really like. Have you visited the campus yet?

nope im visiting tomorrow…and what do u mean “intro to stony brook courses”

First year students are required to take a 1-credit “SBU 101” class that’s basically an intro-to-college. They’re grouped by your undergraduate college, so people in Global Studies take GLS 101, people in Science and Society take SSO 101, and so on with the rest. There are also 102 seminars on different topics, but I don’t know if those are required.

Yes, the 102s are required.

Chris

just visited stony brook…attended a class…it was ok, nothin great, u had students goin on facebook and playing games while others were doing work (expected in college), umm campus is ok, i was expecting more “stuff” i guess, idk wut that means but i guess my expectations were higher…food’s good, kinda overpriced a little…ummmm ppl were nice to me. Students DO stick with their own groups (ex: asians)

today was like earth day or some event…forgot wut it was called, pretty cool though. Ummmmmm the surrounding town is ok too, very suburban like…i liked it

ummmmmmmm the campus though seems very “dry”…like its missing something, idk wut. Its missing a certain bang to it. I guess its too mundane. Some buildings are crappy inside and out while others r just good lookin outside. Stony Brook needs to work on the campus look. lol

Overall, i guess i was tryin to hard to like stony brook since i had higher expectations BUT its a good place. I feel like i got lucky going today since there was a huge event. but stony brook needs to work on the social aspect. LIke more of those celebrations like today

Dude it depends what you are majoring in also. I felt the same way as you until I explored the science classes (since a good portion of students come here for those programs) and you’ll spend most of your time studying if you wish to get a good GPA. Although there are always exceptions (geniuses, ppl who don’t care, ppl who just want to pass, etc.). Trust me once you come here and start taking 15 creds a semester or more possibly and wish to get a high GPA, you won’t have time for these social gatherings.

stony brook lacks the old liberal arts college feel…THATS WHAT I WAS TRYING TO SAY

btw, in terms of classes, i was accepted in to the comp sci honors program so i get what your saying about social gatherings…but still, i want them to be available when im free.

Chris, is it possible to request a room mate? i was at the accepted students open house today and asked three different people and received three different answers.Yes if before may 1, maybe, and no lol can you give a definite answer?

when you meet people, you can create social gatherings. If your creative you will always find something to do.

I’m a little confused. You visited on a day when there was a huge campus-wide festival, and you thought it was cool, but you think SB needs to “work on the social aspect” because there aren’t huge festivals every day… how do you know things are lacking on days that aren’t Earthstock if you haven’t visited before?

For what it’s worth, big campus-wide stuff like that isn’t terribly uncommon, especially in the spring. This week is the arts festival, next week has the Roth Regatta, and the week after is Diversity Day/Strawberry Festival. And when there aren’t huge things going on, there are always tons of other events.

It is possible to request a roommate, but you have to make sure that you’re in the same Undergraduate College first, because that’s how housing is prioritized. Submit your deposits at the same, complete the NSP form at the same time, and list each other as roommates – it’ll probably help your chances.

Chris

thanks chris! I think we’re doing everything today, if not it will definitely be done by this week.
