Women in computer science

As I have visited colleges with my D, I found out about the tremendous decrease in women going into computer science the last 25 years since I was in school. Most schools seem to have about 10-15% of their CS majors being women (these are state schools). Has anyone found this ratio to be better at prestigious private schools? Are there any scholarships aimed at women in CS that would travel to different schools?

There are a ton of opportunities for women in CS which are not available to men, say. The women I do know in CS and related majors are some of the brightest and most hard-working people in the major. The dropout rates I attribute to the perception that the field is not very… feminine… or whatever. It’s silly.

nmsciencemom, my d too is interested in compsci, but also physics and math. where is your d applying and have you learned anything new since your last post?

I’m a junior at college and taking an intro-level computer science class just for fun, and found there are only 5 girls in a class of 50 students.

At my college 100% of the CS majors are female. At a women’s college.

I think it’s interesting that CS is still one of the least popular majors here even though there is no male competition or “intimidation”. We have 30-40 math majors a year and 10-15 physics majors, but only 3-6 CS majors…

Many of the pioneers of computer science were women. They were a large part of the programmers for the world’s first digital computers, and have had a large presence in computer science programs in universities for decades.

@tanveers - Please don’t resurrect a 7-year-old thread!

@xraymancs Why not? that is a great list that zapfino put up!

Personally I’m tired of the We Need More Girls in STEM rally cry. I’ve been a girl in STEM for 30 years. Com Sci is one of the best STEM majors for women; always has been always will be.

@momfromkc because most of those links don’t work anymore.

@MomfromKC - I don’t object to the post, it should just be in a new thread
