Does anybody know of any gyms that are easily accessible from campus that are women only, or have women only exercise rooms? The best I have found so far is a Curves on Washtenaw toward Ypsilanti, but I am familiar with that bus route and I am not comfortable with it after dark. Looking for alternatives.

lol what’s wrong with ccrb(or the IM or ncrb)? no one’s gonna creep on you or anything.
sometimes there are even girls in the weight room, but most of them run treadmills…

ok i noticed i didn’t quite answer your Q -_-

I figured someone would ask. lol. I really have no explanation, I am just much more comfortable that way, and in my experience women only gyms have had a drastically different environment than co-ed gyms which I find to be more motivating. There is a Ladies of America at home that I really love, but there isn’t one in Ann Arbor.

And, actually, people DO creep on others at gyms. I don’t get why anyone in their right mind would think that is an appropriate time for that sort of thing, but there are those that do-- maybe less so at the school gyms, I don’t know. My motivation for wanting a female only gym has little to nothing to do with that, though. I am just more comfortable in general

You could go to that one you mentioned in the OP and carry a handgun or just go in the daytime.

I am in class from 10-6, so in the winter I could only go to the gym on the weekend if I stuck to going during the day. I am sure I would be fine taking the bus but that route at night is just an uncomfortable experience, it is the one that I take to visit my fiance and there are a lot of weirdos who can’t keep their weirdness to themselves.

I remembered after I posted this that there is an exercise room in Newberry House that I could use, but if memory serves there is nothing in it but a nordic track. At this point I am considering just getting a mini elliptical for my room.

Really? Come on now. This isn’t any kind of solution. Presumably the OP is a student and would have a pretty hard time getting a concealed carry license. Not to mention that possessing a weapon without serious training isn’t going to do anything to make one safer.

I assumed they were joking. I do carry pepper spray but generally prefer to just avoid situations I am not comfortable with. I anticipate doing most of my working out around the dinner hour or after and don’t like to go too far from home in any direction at that time of day, but particularly not on that bus route. It’s the route that runs between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, and it is totally fine during the day, but towards the evening it doesn’t feel as safe anymore. I have witnessed several fights, one involving a guy who asked a homeless person for a can so he could **** in it and then called the woman who told him off an n-word-- which caused half the bus to erupt, and it’s just not the most ideal position to be in.

Keeping it unloaded on her probably makes her much safer on it’s own.

I had googled “ann arbor gyms” and went through a list of about 15, probably 4 of which had womens programs, and did not come across that one. Their focus appears to be on pre and post-natal pilates classes, it’s unclear whether they have regular gym facilities. I will have to call. Thanks for finding it.

well if you don’t like the gym maybe you could take up jogging or cycling? maybe jump rope during the days the weather isn’t nice. there all very legitimate forms of cardio.
