Women's World Cup -- who's watching?

Heartbreaking loss this morning! We’re a dual citizen household so we are all in for England now!

I will root for England and Sweden. My grandparents were from England, Scotland, and Sweden. Maybe a weird way to choose, but oh well!

Bill Walsh, the legendary HOF coach of the SF 49ers, had a philosophy of cutting or trading players a year or two early rather than a year or two too late. He was considered ruthless, but very successful.

The USWNT hung on to a several players too long, including Alex Morgan, Kelley O’Hara, Julie Ertz and Megan Rapinoe. The USWNT should have gone with a youth movement.

How do they completely miss the goal on three penalty kicks? Don’t walk the bases loaded in a tie game, kids. Give your team a shot. LOL Fitting end to a pathetic performance.

The first women up set them up for victory and then they blew it. Oh well. It happens.

That’s what was so frustrating. The Swede goalie was great during play, but she didn’t make a single stop in PKs, did she? We whiffed. Alyssa Naeher did everything she could to keep us in the game, including taking her own PK. Beyond frustrating, but I’m happy to be able to get more sleep now. Bummed that ds1 and DIL will be at the game that COULD have been the US match.

I’ve moved on to watching pickleball, baseball and volleyball today.

what is the volleyball?

Well, first i watched the U19 US women’s team in the world championship. There’s a player who is coming to UT in the fall, and I wanted to check her out. She’s AMAZING. I can’t wait to get her on campus. Anyway, it’s the Volleyball World channel on YouTube if you want to catch a game. They are airing a lot of men’s and women’s games.

Second, I watched a livestream in a private FB group that is airing the matches of the US team playing in Puerto Rico in the Pan Am Cup. I wanted to get my Logan Eggleston and Zoe Fleck fix. They played for UT last year.

It’s so hot here that staying inside and watching sports all day is my activity of choice.

Quarterfinals will be interesting.

Will England :england:and France :fr:go on to meet in semis? (Or will Australia :australia:and Columbia :colombia: be Cinderellas?)

I still like Japan :jp: and Spain :es:to go forward for a rematch in the semis.

My picks to win:

England
Sweden
Netherlands

I think Australia has a real shot with Sam Kerr back playing. I also am not sure I love England’s chances against Australia (especially while playing in Australia!). Mary Earps is an incredible goalkeeper, but Sam Kerr is the one player who she struggles to stop shots against in the WSL, and the English defense is going to have to be really on top of their game to prevent putting Mary into some tricky situations if they play them.

Didn’t realize Sam Kerr will play.
Agree Australia can beat England. What a thrill for the host country fans. Will be so exciting.

Looking forward to La Roja v the Oranje tonight.

Yes, she played the last 15 minutes against Denmark and should be available going forward. Curious to see if they start her or just keep her available as a sub going forward.

Excited for this next round of games to start! A friend of mine and her wife have tickets for the Japan/Sweden match as well as both semi-finals and the final. I’m living vicariously through them right now as they send updates. They keep seeing all of the players out and about everywhere they go!

Still rooting for England to win it all, but wouldn’t be mad about Australia upsetting everyone either. England is already down a few players who are injured, so I’m just not convinced they will have the same magic they had last year at the Euros. Mearps can only do so much to keep them in it.

It would be interesting to know how TV ratings have been for this tournament. I am sure Fox was banking on high viewership especially for the USA games. With the USA team out of the tournament so early, I would expect many of the very casual fans might not watch. Of course, for the serious fans, they’re still tuning in.

It’s similar to the moaning from the networks when small market teams make the World Series. Peripheral fans who would tune in for the Yankees, Dodgers, or Red Sox often do not watch if its Houston or Kansas City, for example.

I wouldn’t call myself a very casual fan, but with the US out and games at 2 and 5 a.m. my time I’ve quit watching as much.

My World Cup story is that the US team may have saved the farm! My friends live in Colorado but have a farm in Oklahoma. He was up watching the US team at about 2 am and was checking the cameras at the farm. His wife woke up and said “please turn off that ipad and go to sleep” (hey, they are farmers, they are early to bed…). He said “Look at this” and she said the cameras showed a fire starting near their barn. He called the fire department in Oklahoma and there was indeed a fire starting in the fields and he sounded the alarms.

She’s never allowed to criticize him again for always checking the cameras at their properties and she’s pretty sure he’ll be installing more cameras.
