Title pretty much covers it :)

I suggest sending copies of the notification letters/emails by priority mail to the admissions office, tomorrow. Or you could email scanned copies or the original emails.
Congrats, heinochus!

Well, to be more specific, I got second place in a couple of regional events [a region that covers several cities], but there aren’t really any certificates or notifications of this; just a document that lists all the competitors.

I figured I’d just send a short description of the two awards in an e-mail - but to whom?

Oh, and thanks for the congratulations!

Email:
admi@rice.edu

Two Second places is nothing to sneeze at – you should feel honored!
Can you give them some info about the events – what exactly you did, how many you competed against, topic names, etc. help them understand how significant these victories are!

Thanks for the e-mail address! Message sent. I included a couple of sentences as description - hopefully the right amount :)

Should son send in National Merit Finalist and Presidential Scholar Nominee. These just came in recently.

The National Merit Finalist will get to them eventually.

The Presidential Scholar Nominee is just a nominee, there are many more steps. It seems premature and derivative.

Perhaps the counselor could just add to mid year report.

My son is also a NMF and a Presidential Scholar candidate, and he just reported that to MIT, but they have a specific mid-year report form that allows the student to provide such updates. I don’t see any harm in reporting it, but since both these things are strictly mechanical results from test scores, which the colleges already have as part of the application, I do wonder if it isn’t a bit pointless. Schools like Rice and MIT can take one look at an application and make a pretty good guess that a kid will be either. I seem to recall that a significant percentage of each entering class at Rice are NMF.

On the other hand, my son also had a few other competition honors recently, so it would be nice to let the schools he has applied to know that. I’ll pass along the e-mail above to him. We are very eager to hear from Rice. We weren’t able to visit Rice until late October, so there was no realistic way for him to decide whether to apply early. Now that he’s in the regular decision process, however, the wait for March seems very slow.
