I have some B’s on my transcript from middle school classes that counted for highschool credit, but have had straight A’s in highschool. I’m in my junior year of an IB program currently (I only mention I’m in IB because Florida schools do have a preference for it)
I’m not interested in going to any ivy’s or extremely competetive private schools, but I am interested in getting a decent scholarship at a state school in Florida.
My GPA currently is:
3.9 unweighted (it has risen .1 since the last time i checked it. Neat.)
4.78 weighted
I’m just wondering if non-super-competitive state schools that tend to offer good scholarships will look at which grades caused my gpa to be less than perfect, and account for the fact that I was 12 years old when I made those less than stellar grades. I’ve done my best to not sound like an over-worried braggy wanker but it has been a concern of mine for a few years now, and my counselor has not given me a straight answer as to how these grades will be considered.
Thanks for the help.
tl;dr I did badly in middle school, wondering if colleges will notice that the grades hurting my gpa are from middle school, and if it will affect my chances at a scholarship from the schools I apply to.
Each college has its own policy on how it uses courses, grades, GPA, and class rank. If a college uses GPA and/or class rank as determined by the high school, then whether your middle school grades matter depends on your high school’s policy. But many college recalculate GPA based on their own methods.
If they appear on your high school transcript, they will be evaluated by universities (California may differ from this general paradigm); however, a constantly improving trend and an excellent 3.9/4.8 GPA should easily compensate for those freshmen “slip-ups.”
The Florida public universities (UF, FSU, UCF, USF, UNF, FAU, FIU, etc…) will consider those classes.
For the Florida schools, your GPA is more than high enough. Focus on your Test scores and EC’s. With high test scores, you should get excellent merit scholarships at all of the universities, outside of UF and FSU.
