Wondering if AP credit applies differently to the IGETC and the 60 unit minimum.

So I know that the UCs HAVE to accept the IGETC if your community college certifies it. It doesn't matter if you have a ton of 3's on your APs to satisfy GEs. If the community college certifies your IGETC then you meet the requirement and you are waved from whatever GE requirements that your transfer school has. (except for some of the colleges at UCSD I guess)

But what about using AP scores to satisfy the 60 unit transfer requirement? I would assume that is handled outside your community college and is up to the UCs. I'm afraid that even though I have a combination of CC and AP units that exceed 60, the UCs might discard a couple or all of my AP units. This would put me at sophomore standing and that would surely result in rejection.

I'm asking this because I wasn't exactly the most responsible student in high school. I took English Language and Composition, U.S. History, European History, and U.S. Government with a lazy effort and scored a 4, 4, 3, and 4 respectively. No fives.

I've planned out my semesters with light full-time schedules so that I can hold a part-time job, do track and field, and still have a great GPA. This basically includes taking three academic courses per semester and having track as my fourth class. I'm not accounting for winter or summer sessions due to budget cuts (basically all of the community colleges where I live are not holding winter sessions, most of them held very limited summer sessions, and I'm unable to afford a car at the moment so I can't commute to many CCs). I'm able to do this only on the basis that all of my AP units will contribute to the 60 unit requirement. In two years I will have about 46 units acquired from community college, 18.67 semester units from APs (got this from the uctap website), and together that would put me at 64.67 units. I really can't afford to lose any of those extra units.

Sorry if this sounds so convoluted! Just trying to think ahead so that I'm not banging my head against a wall a couple years from now! :(

Actually, I just read an older college confidential post and I think I’ve got my answer. Apparently I am guaranteed the 18.67 semester units. Whether or not they count as GEs or electives is up to the UC campus. However, since I am at a community college then the whole GE thing is based solely on my two-year school’s IGETC certification. I’m in the clear as far as I know. Can anyone confirm this?

The general consensus among UC’s is anything above a 3 will count toward some credit. It really depends on the class. For example, when it comes to UCLA, a score of 3 will result in SPAN 3 and a score of 4 will result in SPAN 4. For some AP exams, they will only take 4-5. Like I said, it really depends.

Some schools will allow AP exams to cover IGETC requirements. I believe UCD is one of them. What UC are you thinking of transferring to? This can help a lot.

Any passing grade will count towards the 60 units, but if you took a a class that corresponds with a test that you would get subject credit for, it could be a problem.
