This is my first post, so i'm not sure if this post goes here or at the College Admissions...

I applied for Winter/Spring Semster/Quarter of 06. My major is psychology and my GPA is 2.86. I only applied to UCSB, UCI, UCSC, and UCM. I also applied to SFSU and other various CSU's. I would be transferring from a community college in LA.

Only UCI, UCSC, and SFSU admitted me, which i am very happy about. I currently live in SoCal, and i wish to go to a school up north, which would be primary be UCSC and SFSU. But i'm not really sure which school to pick between those two.

UCSC
It is a UC, which has more presitge and what not. I heard they have guarentee housing for transfer students, but i have to call them and ask what is the whole ordeal about that. It is very 'nature' orienten, i'm not sure if that's good or not.

SFSU
I love the the city of San Francisco, thats the biggest reason why i want to go there. Although they have a space of housing for me, it is an in-campus housing apt. I really wish to dorm, but i think that UCSC would offer me a dorm room, but i am not sure.

Dude, he/she got accepted. Did you read that?

I suggest you look into the questions you put about the two schools. Also, I wouldn't rule out UCI. It's ranked higher nationally than both UCSC and SFSU--although certainly those ranks are not all-important.

I wouldn't base my decision on prestige alone. Its not so much the school you go to but what you do there. I think if you are more comfortable and like SF more then go to SFSU then again UCSC is a really good school too. Have you tried asking if its possible for you to dorm at SFSU maybe they can put you on a waitlist or something which is likely you'll get a dorm since soo many students end up opting not to live on campus. Go with what you think works best for you in the long run. You'll only be there 3 years tops so imo it really doesnt matter that much as far location.

Would i really be missing out if i live in an apt, rather than dorm my first year? People usually advise me that you make most of your friends dorming, but would i really miss that 'dorming experience?'

I'm a recent transfer and live in an off campus (albeit super close) apartment. All of my friends who came from my CC decided to dorm, so I've had a chance to kind of compare our experiences. So far, I'm not regretting living off campus at all. I'm not very concerned about meeting people, as I'm going to be participating in several ECs that will help me. Also, I'm meeting people in my discussion sections and in lecture.

If you think you really want the dorm experience, which can be both good and bad, then its something that you should try. But if you don't think you'd be happy in that environment, don't dorm just because other people say it's what you should do. If you put a little effort in, making friends won't be an issue.
