I got a scholarship from a large, established scholarship organization. They say I won't get the check until I submit the enrollment verification form (which I have to wait until I'm actually on-campus to get)... but I just paid first semester dues.

So the question is: So these scholarship organizations send you the check so you can cash it yourself, or do they send it to the school in your name?

The ones I have that require a verification form send it to my school, made out to my school.

I sent my verification form to the financial aid office and they filled it out and sent it in for me as soon as I registered for classes. (I am not "on campus" yet.)

The 2 my D got sent the money to the school and then the school credits it to her account. If anything is left over, the school cuts her a check.

Same with my kids' schools. Organization sent check directly to school or if sent to kids, it was in both student's and University's name so couldn't cash without giving to school first. If payment is received by college after payment due date or after payment has been made, they credit it to student account and then cut a check in student's name for the amount. This can be anywhere from 5 days to 4 weeks after they get the money depending on the college.

If the scholarship isn't scheduled to arrive until after your tuition due date, some financial aid offices (like mine) will defer the amount if you can show them official paperwork about the scholarship - especially if it is an established scholarship program. You would have to contact the fin aid office to arrange it and have it approved before your bill is due, of course.
