I want to apply for the research fellowship and do research in the sciences. However, I have never done research before, ever. (By CC standards, I'm doomed to the 6th ring of Hell, haha.)

Do any real JHU students (I know you exist!) know if most of the people w/ the scholarship are just starting out, or if they have all sorts of internships, publications, etc.?
Thanks in advance.

I am not a “real JHU student” but I am a “real” JHU admissions counselors and I think I can assist with your question. Though we do not official track such statistics, on average each year about half of the students awarded a Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellowship have had research-related experiences while in high school. This means that about half of the Wilson awardees have not pursued any meaningful research while in high school, and that is not a pre-requisite to be considered. The Wilson selection committee bases their decision on a student’s research potential and choose to invest in students who they believe will fulfill the fellowship the best, and that does not always mean a student has to have done research already.

The Krieger School has set up an excellent website with extensive details about the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship which I encourage you to check out: [Home[/url]

Additionally, two current Hopkins Interactive students are Wilson fellows and I encourage you to ask them questions about their experiences:

Thanks AdmissionsDaniel!

I just submitted my application for Johns Hopkins and I had a couple questions about the scholarship.
Does applying for the scholarship make a difference on your admission status?
I have had research experience, and I would like to continue with work similar to what I’m doing now. However, I do not have an exact project in mind. I have very broad ideas as to what I would wish to accomplish (something like finding a protein to block and destroy HIV virus receptor sites), but I do not even know if this is possible and I do not know how to reach these goals. Is this what the scholarship committee is looking for in students, or are they expecting a more specific type of project proposal?
