Woodrow Wilson Research Fellowship Questions

I just submitted my application for Johns Hopkins and I had a couple questions about the scholarship.
Does applying for the scholarship make a difference on your admission status?
I have had research experience, and I would like to continue with work similar to what I'm doing now. However, I do not have an exact project in mind. I have very broad ideas as to what I would wish to accomplish (something like finding a protein to block and destroy HIV virus receptor sites), but I do not even know if this is possible and I do not know how to reach these goals. Is this what the scholarship committee is looking for in students, or are they expecting a more specific type of project proposal?

First, it is important to note the Woodrow Wilson fellowship is a FELLOWSHIP not a scholarship. The $10,000 is a research grant that must be used by the recipient for research not as a discount of tuition. This is am important distinction to be aware of … the Wilson is not a tuition scholarship and not related to financial aid in any manner.

The Woodrow Wilson application information is included in the application file for when an admissions counselor reviews the file, and the information will be take into account during the application review. However, the information that will be looked at in the admissions review will relate to a student’s previous or current accomplishments / experiences in research, not what they would do with the fellowship. Woodrow Wilson applications are a minor element in the admissions review, if they are even factored in. The application materials are specifically for the fellowship committee’s selection process.

As far as what the fellowship committee is looking for in the application, the only answer I will provide is to answer the fellowship application prompt however you seem fit. As with our application essays, we are not looking for anything specific rather we are looking for how each applicant chooses to respond to the question. This is why we leave these questions open-ended and open to interpretation.

What questions/prompts are you referring to?
On the application form from the website, it asks us to write about our past research experience and what possible research projects we intend to pursue if selected as a Fellow.

Is this what you mean as “these questions”?

In addition, I want to know how competitive one might become if selected as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow when applying to top med schools such as Johns Hopkins Med and Harvard?
since only around 20 people are chosen and not all of them will pursue into medicine, I thought it would increase the chance of med school admission if other med school requirements are met

The thing about the Woodrow Wilson is that it’s for a select few individuals who have a significant outside interest in a specific topic to produce an original piece of research on that topic. It MAY help you get into medical school, but the people who get selected for the fellowship aren’t doing it to get into med school. Personally, I know of no one in my class who who has the fellowship (or they haven’t told me), but from what I have read about it and the profiles of the awardees, it’s not something they are doing to better their chances to get into a certain professional school. It’s because they have a distinct passion to learn more specifically about a certain subject beyond what could be achieved on the Hopkins campus or that requires a fairly large amount of resources amount to accomplish.

If you want the fellowship because you have a question you really want to answer or research more deeply, then by all means apply, but doing it just so you have a better chance of medical school A) will not work because you probably won’t get selected and B) is not a good way about the learning process. Just my thoughts on it. Good luck with everything!

Im not saying that I want to get the fellowship just to increase my chance of getting into med school… that’s totally not right… What I am wondering is just how it will increase the chance of med school acceptance? esp. Johns Hopkins med

The fellowship in and of itself will likely have no impact on your medical school application. However, the research you do as an undergrad, with or without the fellowship, will be considered in med school admissions. The fellowship is basically a way of identifying people who have a interest and passion for research and giving them an early boost. It is definitely an honor to receive it, but if you don’t end up getting the fellowship, you could still contact faculty members as a freshman and get involved in research.

I was referring to the following: [Johns Hopkins University Office of Undergraduate Admissions - Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program Candidate Application Form](http://apply.jhu.edu/wilson/wilson_form_2011.html)
“In the space below, please provide an example of a possible project you might choose to pursue if selected as a Woodrow Wilson Research Fellow. Feel free to discuss past projects you have completed or work of which you are especially proud in your explanation.”

We do not collect data on whether Woodrow Wilson fellows have a “better chance” for acceptance to medical school, law school, or other professional programs. Obviously, having the opportunity to do independent research during one’s undergraduate years and receiving $10,000 from the university is going to be a big part of a student’s resume when applying to professional schools. Also, there is no link between the Woodrow Wilson and acceptance to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, as there are no programs that guarantee or improve a student’s chances for acceptance to our School of Medicine.

Am I supposed to receive a confirmation email once I’ve submitted the wilson undergraduate research fellowship form? I recently submitted mine but I haven’t received a confirmation email.

By the way, I apologize for posting on an old thread. I didn’t realize that I should post on a new thread… I’m new to College Confidential.

@heytherehey Yes, you are supposed to receive an email confirmation of application receipt. On my D conformation they listed this address to contact with questions: applyhelp@jhu.edu
Maybe you should send them an email.

question: does applying to the woodrow wilson fellowship increase your chances of getting into JHU? bc it shows more interest/commitment?

@allima No

@saif235 are you sure… because essentially, you could use it as an additional supplement, you talk about yourself & why you want to perform a specific research project. in a way, its demonstrating your ideas & your passions & showing them more about you. so i think it works in your favor …
