i just submitted my common app and supplement for ED, all my essays were around the correct word cound + or - 5 words, except one of my cornell supplements was 300 instead of 250 (though it fit the character count)...i had really tried to cut it down but i couldnt anymore w/o losing a lot of substance...is this going to hurt me in admissions?

no

300 isn't as rediculous as what I've seen in other forums. If its that good an essay then it won't hurt your chances too much. Just don't test their patience by going a hundred or 2 over their limit!

A general rule I followed was less than (or equal to, lol) 100 over on the 500 word essays and less than 50 on the 250 word ones, so I wouldn't worry if I were you.

The numbers are there to avoid rediculously long essays and to make one student essay comperable to another. They don't exist to be a pain in your ass. You should be fine, as your length is reasonable.
