[Automatic Academic Scholarships: Office of Scholarships: Indiana University Bloomington](http://www.scholarships.indiana.edu/pages/automatic.php)

Research. As you can see, you might be eligible for the lowest TWO levels of automatic scholarship at IU (based on your ACT at least). I assume your quoted GPA was UW. I called the school and they said they use whatever score the high school sends them to calculate those scholarships. So, if your school sends weighted, and you’re abov 3.7-3.8 - you’ll get a scholarship automatically. So surely that puts you above the line of “accepted”.

The original post is completely exagerated.

My GPA was only 3.0 (I had 1 F in Honors Algebra 2, 2 “No Credits,” 4 D’s, like 10 C’s) and my ACT score was nothing spectacular at a 27. Also my weighted GPA was only 2.9… and I got accepted from OUT OF STATE last week.

This school is NOT hard to get into at all.

ImOnaBoat,

It is not possible to have a weighted GPA that is below your regular GPA (that is, you cannot possibly have a weighted 2.9 GPA as you claim to if your regular GPA was a 3.0 as you state).

Also, I have to wonder about the grades you claim to have gotten;–here’s why:

Let’s presume for a moment that you are attending a regular 4-year high school right now (meaning you are in your senior year). This means you should have 3 years of grades by now–so even if you took 6 courses a semester, you should have 36 grades (6 courses per semester x 6 semesters) received at this point at the most.

You claim that you have received 10 Cs and 4 Ds and 1 F at this point. This gives you a grand total of 24 grade points from those 15 courses (10 x 2 plus 4 x 1 plus 1 x 0). If you have a regular GPA of 3.0 overall (as you claim), then that means that you received a total of 108 (36 x 3) grade points from all of your courses. To do this would mean that you received 84 grade points (108-24) from your remaining 21 courses (36-15), which means that you would have had to receive an “A” in every single other course you took during the past three years (something that is possible, but also something I find quite unlikely).

What I think is a bit more likely is that you have either exaggerated your number of Cs and Ds slightly–or else you’ve been taking 7 courses per semester.

Also, I’m not sure why you think a 27 ACT is such a terrible score. If you check the following table:

http://www.act.org/news/data/09/pdf/National2009.pdf

you’ll see that a 27 ACT score is achieved by only 12% of all people who take the test (cumulative percentile score of 88%).

I think you should be proud of what you have achieved–and not consider it such an easy thing. I know this well, since I have been advising students–both on this site and in person–and I know many of them who would be absolutely thrilled to be able to get either a 3.0 GPA or a 27 ACT–much less both of these combined.

P.S. Good luck at IU-B.

hey I have been accepted into IU for about a month now, but am looking for a direct admit to the kelley school of business. Has anybody received a direct admit so far, and what does the email your receive look like/who is it from/what does it say? I received an email today, which I think might mean I got a direct admit, but I am not sure b/c it is is worded oddly? So ya PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!

So I really want to be accepted in to Kelley! I have a 28 ACT and 4.1 weighted, how competitive is petitioning to get accepted?

Tim10, When we had a tour of Kelley a few weeks ago, someone asked about the petition process. The counselor said that the people they mostly look at were one point off on the ACT. I think you have a shot! Go for it. Good luck.

I really really really hope I met the required ACT score this weekend. I have a 3.6 GPA which so I am literally inches away from being a direct admit…

Thanks for the insight patio!

My counselor just sent out my petition for direct admission into Kelley last week and I have similar stats as you: 1300 on SAT(Critical Reading+MAth), 28 ACT, 3.5 unweighted GPA, 4.3 weighted GPA. I really hope I will be accepted=)!! If I am accepted into Kelley as a direct admit then I am for sure going to be at Indiana University Bloomington in the fall next year=)

Calcruzer,

Thanks for sharing the ranking (March post) with us. I might add that we need to normalize the ranking by the tuition to reflect the value of the school. If you do that, you really have to say both IU and Purdue are amazing schools not to mention the scholarship opportunities. I believe that IU and Purdue are good enough for most especially if you are aiming for professional/graduate schools later on.

If you think that you are good, get into the honor’s program and compete with those students in the top of their high school class. You may be surprised by what this recession has done for bringing the top in-state students back to IU.

I must say, I think my school sent in my WEIGHTED gpa as UNWEIGHTED, so it said 3.6/4.0. Really, ACT and SAT are the biggest, since I got a 33, maybe they turned a blind eye.

I must say I have really loved IU, it is really the perfect college town (bloomington). You will love it.

i don’t really know my real cumalitive gpa. my transcript says 3.37 (now it’s up to a 3.44, but i don’t think the university saw that when i submitted my app), but it doesn’t count my freshman year. i moved schools between freshman and sophomore year, so the gpas aren’t combined on paper. i had a 2.7 freshman year, 3.3 sophomore, 3.4 junior, and 3.8 senior. yes, i got accepted within two weeks of applying. i am OOS, from hawaii, AND a minority (asian) so i believe this helped me with my acceptance. also, my ACT is a 27, which is actually half decent in hawaii (fact: people in hawaii have VERY low test scores). i had 4 C’s my freshman year, 2 sophomore, 2 junior, and none so far this year. So yeah, i’ve had my fair share of C’s, but its always been in math+science which are obviously my weak points.

anywayssssssssss. i chose Indiana as my school because it is so far away from Hawaii, and I NEED TO GET AWAY. i want seasons, a chance to start over, and a major change in scenery. however, a few of my close friends applied to Indiana as well. This may sound incredibly selfish of me, but like i said, the reason i want to go to Indiana is to leave everything i had in Hawaii behind. As much as i hate to say it, i really don’t want my friends to go, but both of them are set on Indiana as their first choice, and i know the only reason they even found out about the school is because of me applying there. One has about a 3.35 GPA and 1720 SATS, the other has a 3.0 with 1720 as well. Both are minority (asians), and of course from hawaii. Do they have a fair shot of getting in? One of my other friends who planned on going to indiana got deferred with a 3.45 and 1690 SATs. I also have ANOTHER friend who isn’t from Hawaii who got outright rejected with a 3.2 and 1680. Whats the deal?

^^^ Even if your friends are admitted to IU, it is a BIG school. Unless you make an effort, you won’t have to see them. 5 or 6 kids from son’s hs class enrolled at IU. Not that he doesn’t like them (because he does), but from day 1 he made an effort to get to know other people. Whenever I would ask how ‘so and so’ was doing, he’d say he hadn’t seen them for months.

The point is that, unless you specifically ask to room with them, or you are in the same class sections, chances are very good that you won’t run into them very often, if at all.

Not to take anything away from you personally but Indiana is probably just so excited to have someone from Hawaii. Schools publish where students are from. I don’t think being Asian as in Japanese, Chinese or Korean actually gets you preferential treatment in most colleges. Asians are over-represented minorities. But being Hawaiian could be a plus. I wonder what they’ll think if they get applications from 3 Hawaiians in one year! Maybe they’ll start a Hawaiian studies major. Just kidding.

But I think if your friends get in, you might be glad to have a familiar face. I don’t think they’ll keep you from starting over. It’s a huge school and really far away.

Yeah, being Hawaiian has crazy benefits. Unfortunately, I am not Hawaiian. Just pure Asian. My friend found out today she was deferred, so I am very grateful to have been accepted. I guess you’re right with the whole big college thing. The thing I’m worried about is not so much running into them…it’s more like I’m afraid they will follow me around.

It doesn’t matter if you’re ethnically Hawaiian. My daughter’s college (not Indiana) sent out a list of characteristics of kids in their freshman class and one of the things they listed was all the states that they came from. Like we have freshman from 43 states. It also would be good to be from let’s say Wyoming.

Anyone know about the Apparel Merchandising program/is it reputable?

I’m a freshman at IU. Just to give you all an idea, I was the definition of borderline with 25 ACT/3.0 ACT (deferred twice, waitlisted).

^^ I don’t know about the reputation of the Apparel Merchandising program but IU is one of the few schools (esp public) in the country where you’ll find that major. So go off of that. I’m thinking of a minor in apparel merchandising and my friends who are majoring in it say it’s surprisingly difficult but rewarding.
