I am currently a first semester sophomore, and I have held a student assistant-ship since I started as a freshman. My job is a pretty good job, and the pay is good, but I am beginning to feel overwhelmed with all of my classes/studying plus 20 hours of work every week. I am beginning to wonder if it is worth not working and just having free time to relax, workout, whatever.
Anyone one else work and feel the same way? Any one not work and wish they had a job along with their school? Is the 10 dollars an hour I get at work worth the lack of free time? Will I miss not having my job if I quit?

While I was in college I was in a similar situation. I ended up sticking with my job, but arranging my schedule in such a way that gave me free time. Every day after class I left myself 2-3 hours to do homework before I had to go into work and I arranged my work schedule so I worked on the same days I had class. With weekends off of class and work I felt as though I could get my work done and I had enough free time to relax, hang out with friends, or take a weekend getaway somewhere. If you have a flexible work schedule you could try this, or just cut your hours back.

Also if you don’t NEED a job, you could just quit. In my situation, I needed mine because my dad couldn’t support me financially on top of paying college tuition. I also wanted to have some money saved up for graduation. I know for me I would not have missed my job if I had the option of quitting, but if you like it you might.

Weigh the pros and cons and see if quitting is the right option or see if you can move around your work schedule at all.

I worked a lot as a college student, and it was overwhelming at times. If you don’t have to work, then the fact that you’re feeling overwhelmed is reason enough to quit.

But keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You could find a different job that requires less hours or works better with your schedule. 20 hours could be overwhelming but 10 or 12 might be very doable. Another job might have easier scheduling requirements so you can have bigger or more frequent chunks of free time. Or you could find something related to future career goals that might make it feel more useful and worthwhile.

I personally feel that everyone has time for something besides school. So just make sure that you have something to fill up your time. Everyone needs time to relax and decompress but if you find that you’re spending hours lazing around, it might be good to come up with something productive to do. It doesn’t have to be a job and it doesn’t have to take up all of your free time, but you should do something.
