I graduated in 2011 with a bachelors in mathematics. The summer after graduation I did an internship/research with biostatistics so I can do/learn about applied mathematics/statistics. After I decided to take the GRE so I could get into a masters statistics program. So I studied for the GRE and took the exam then I worked at a non major related job until this current fall semester. This semester I started my masters degree in statistics in new york city, full time.

Do you guys think I should go to school part time and get a data entry/analyst position instead. I only have the biostatistics experience. A member of my family is strongly encouraging I work because one of her friends got 2 masters degrees and did not get a job.

My goal was to get my masters degree as soon as possible. If the case is you should get experience before a job what is the point of 5 year master programs at some colleges/universities?

Anyways, I'm thinking about doing school part time next semester and getting a entry level job so I can get some experience in the field even though I'd just rather get my masters.

What do you guys think? Thank You

IMO, the best strategy would be to work in the field you want to be in (if you can), and get your degree taking 1-2 classes a semester (including summer).

fwiw, I started grad school, did 2 internships, then a paid summer internship, then a paid year internship (this took me to normal 2 years in grad school), and when I would’ve “graduated” I was hired fulltime. I am putting the finishing touches on my thesis and will graduate in the spring.

I got my Masters part-time with my employer picking up the tab. My son is getting his Masters part-time with his employer picking up the tab. He gets work experience and education - his cost is in free time. I’ve always told him: you can always go to school; you can’t always get a job in your major area. So go to school but look for a job while you’re going to school and if you find something, switch to part-time mode.

I’m currently in graduate school right now. I just finished my first semester and have 4 more to go. I am also working full-time. It helps that my program is nearly all online and is actually designed for the working professional…

your advice was the plan i decided I should do. I am continuing to go to school, but I am applying for jobs in my area right now, and If I do come along a job I will drop some classes and work and go to school part time

thank you for the advice
