Work and transferring with a great GPA in 2 years- is it possible?

I am a student at Moorpark college, but already have 15 units due to AP classes/Pierce classes part-time. I just graduated high school, so my experience with balancing work and college is very limited.

This week I was just hired at a job where I got scheduled to work 24 hours a week. However, I'm also taking 13 units. I am extremely scared that I won't be able to keep up with the work. The job itself is very boring and you do alot of nothing...so I can study while I'm at work...but, I don't get home until 7pm 2 days a week, and 10pm 3 days a week. Is there anyone who has had a part time job who has been able to get great grades while at community college? I'm nervous about it. Thanks!

(Also, if anyone has any experience driving down the 118 to Moorpark to Chatsworth in 40 minutes, let me know. :) )

coming from someone who fcked up in high school - it is manageable.

i worked 30+ hours a week, volunteered, held up a decent social life, joined the honors program (took honors classes), joined clubs, tackled 15+ units a semester, and got home after 11 every night. i also took all summer and winter sessions, and i did not use any ap credit from high school. night classes are your best option if you’re looking for ease and availability.

even with all this, i still managed to pull a 3.5, and i feel i could have done much much better. i will be at ucla in the fall.

it’s really not as hard as you think it’ll be, it’s all a matter of adjusting because you’re going to be pretty much on your own now, unlike high school where everyone is breathing down your neck.

I worked 30+ hours a week and still did ok witha full load. took 3 years but that was due to poor course planning.

I took 24+ (at most, 30), had a few good extracurrics, took honors, and pulled off a 3.6. Took 13-19 units (counting transferrable ONLY). Use your time management skills, don’t give up. It’s all about time management but realize it sure is a task. Good luck!

It is very manageable! Just make sure you know your priorities when it comes down to choosing only one of the both (if ever)

24 hours of work and 13 units is a cakewalk

^
Yeah, it kinda is. Well for people who can get their priorities straight.

I worked 30+ during school and was doing up to 19 units, no less than 16 each semester. I was the treasurer of PTK, and a bunch of other stuff. Since I was also in the Honors Program, I also had to attend monthly meetings when I didn’t have class which was a pain. Thankfully I didn’t go to school everyday, I worked out my schedule so that one semester I would go MWF and the other TTh. That helped out a lot!

Edit: Forgot to add that I got a 4.0 all four semesters and that I have a very nice social life, thank you very much, lol. I visit my friends at UCLA all the time! If I didn’t I probably would have transferred in a year since I have billions of AP unit credit, lol.

Ive been working at a lab for 40+ hours a week and have been taking 12 unit semesters. (taking 16 this semester).

i was a slacker in highschool which led me to CCC. but, if you prioritize your time you can pull it off. (ive been recieving straight A’s).

I guess for me, i had to come to terms with the saying: "There are three things in a person’s life: Work, Education, and Social life. Choose two.

Fall semester I took 13 units, spring semester I took 17 (mostly major prereqs too), both semesters I was interning around 20 hours a week, so I was always either at school or at work.

With all that school and work, I was still able to find time to mess around on the weekends with friends and pull off a 3.6 GPA. It’s not a great GPA (especially for a mech. engineering major), but it is what it is. Like the another said above, I feel I could’ve done a lot better, especially if I spent more time studying on the weekends.

But if I could do it, ANYONE can

yes characters

I would like to know of the job where you do a lot of nothing.

lazyville usa

Thank you! I appreciate all the help. You guys have made me alot less fearful about work/school at the same time.

I work for a cable company…where I sit at the phone all day. It barely rings, so I don’t do much except sit around. Its nice!

Sounds like a pretty sweet job for a college student. You shouldn’t have any problems getting your work done seeing as how your only task at work is to answer the phone… and it rarely rings. I want a job like this!
