Work experience in high school

Hey,

How much do summer jobs/part-time jobs in high school help when applying for internships? I'm talking about jobs like data entry, help in a supermarket and grooming the school. obviously i didn't take up this jobs because i hoped to boost my career but because i needed the money...however, i'm curious, can such jobs make my resume look better?

of course they will make your resume look better. you cant fill up an entire page with just your clubs/activities.

oh gosh yes. They definitely helped me get my internship this summer, and I had a friend who worked throughout HS to support his family…and now in college he gets amazing management-level positions over the summer b/c the “work experience” part of his resume is so impressive. You’re doing yourself a favor…trust me, I know those minimum-wage jobs suck, but you’ll thank yourself for it later when you get a sweeeet internship at a big bank or in DC or a major research institution haha.

If I were an employer (who, by the way, probably worked a minimum-wage job at some point), I would think anyone would lacked some sort of work experience was either too arrogant or too lazy to take a job. Either way, I wouldn’t hire you.

But if you did have one, I would understand that you are reliable, that you are responsible, and that you probably won’t mind if I have ridiculous expectations of you with little pay and no thanks.

Thanks guys!

on a completely random note,

what’s the minimum wage in the USA and how much do such jobs usually pay?
just asking out of curiousity, i’ve been living in switzerland all my life and it might be interesting to compare the salaries.

it varies by state, but expect around $7

Indiana’s Minimum Wage is $5.85 at the moment.

It’s going up at the end of July to $6.55, but at the moment. It’s still $5.85

Wow…I guess I shouldn’t complain that I “only” get 21$/hour at my local supermarket then :XXX
seriously, i would have never thought that the wages are that low in the US, thanks for enlightening me, people!

haha yes, prepare yourself…my friends from Europe are shocked that Yale’s minimum wage is “only” around $11/hr (which is waaay more than any state’s!) America kind of hates socialism, and the idea of having any minimum wage at ALL, believe it or not, is still hotly debated

In the US, if you get a very “high-paying” internship at one of the “Big-4” investment banks (ie the most prestigious internships out there) you can expect to make ~ $25/hr!!

work expereicne is great on an application
