Do non-paid internships at a university count as work experience on that section of the Common Application? Will not having any other paid work experience hurt me in admissions for HYPS? Would other applicants almost the same as me be given an advantage just because they had a summer job one year (I’m not talking about kids who had to work to support their family, etc., but about ones that took up a summer job to raise money for a computer or car or something like that)?

summer jobs have a very mild effect on admissions...as for your question, i wouldn't put a non-paid internship under the work experience, but rather on your resume (which you should have it you are applying to those schools).

hmm...should I really have a resume? That book Acing the College Application by Michelle Hernandez advises against a resume. Maybe I could just put it on my activity list? I just hate to leave the whole section blank, but I guess if it doesn't matter much...

any other input?

What about paid internships? Do those go into work experience even if you did it for the experience and not the money?
