Just throwing a question out there to all you CC'ers...Is work/internship experience better than volunteering hours? Other way around? Or do they balance out?

They're equally important. One cannot be substituted for the other. You should have both, if you want to get into college, etc.

Although both would be ideal, imo work is more important. You need to be more responsible to hold down a job. For example, if you don't feel like volunteering some days, you can just call in and say you're not coming, and your "boss" can't do anything (what are they gonna do, fire you?). On the other hand... you would get f1ired for that if you were at a real job.

I think they are both equally important.

you really need a combination. While I agree with what jerryhathaway said, everyone looks at your vollunteer experience.

I think work is much better. Volunteering, once you have enough hours like 50-150 or somewhere around that that's enough. You don't get much experience from that. If you work somewhere actually worthwhile doing worthwhile things that it's good. For example like last week I did a volunteer thing at a Youth Fest thing. It was like a total waste of time and useless for me. We were stuffing bags to hand out to people. This taught me nothing.

A job can teach you discipline, social skills and responsibility. Also you get money so that's a definetely good thing.

^I pretty much feel the same way about volunteering. I'd much rather work an actual job. but the fact remains that everyone is going to want to see volunteering to a certain extent.

I got a paid position at a nonproft as a reult of many hours of vulunteering.

if i plan on volunteering at a hospital this summer...how many hours is a good number to aim for??

If you do like 20 hours a week for like two months you'd be good.

how many do you think you can handle per week? you have to decide how much time you'll actually have, and then go from there.

I think you should move in at the hospital. That really shows commitment. :)

lol, yes that would. You might not want to start with to many... 20 hours a week is a lot. especially if you have other things going on. maybe start with 10 hours a week.

4 hours a day wouldn't kill you...work from like 8-12 (am) unless you have something else that comes up. 10 hours a week is fine if you work like 2 or 3 days a week.

Volunteering at a local community college's art gallery...over-done?

I don't want to volunteer at the library/hospital like everyone else. Hopefully an art gallery is a good place, since I love art?

i do like 20 hrs a week in volunteer work

thats probably good..cuz im trying to rack up 100 hours this summer so i dont have to worry about it during the school year as much (for like NHS and stuff..i'll probably just do like one saturday every month during the year to keep up)

thanks

What do you mean by better? Better is a subjective word. I'd say volunteering is better because you help people and it makes you feel good.

Don't volunteer because it's something to put on a college application.
