I've noticed that some colleges consider "work experience" as a (generally minor) admissions factor.
Does anyone know how much of an effect it ACTUALLY has? Does the type of job make a difference?

I ask because I have worked as a teacher at a daycare/preschool all my junior year and plan on working next year as well, and I want to know if it's something worthy of putting on my application.

I think that if you worked at a meaningful (not like occasionally babysitting for the neighbors)job during the school year, and still kept grades up, then it is worthy, becuase it shows you have a good work ethic.

I have a job with a climatology professor inputting data and doing literature search this summer. Is that helpful?

it is amazing you all made it through highschool :)

yes, work, is a good thing, as are ECs, etc

college dont' want kids who did nothing but school work during HS

Does work experience make up for not playing any sports? I have been told by many people that my chances at good schools are lowered because of my lack of involvement with sports. I have just never been an athletic person. I thought that my work experience could make up for the sports, but apparently not, according to the people who I have spoken with. Does working 20 hours a week not make up for playing sports?

If it matters, I am a Pharmacy Technician, and I am planning on doing Pre-Pharmacy.

It is ridiculous to expect EVERYBODY to play sports! Imagine if colleges only accepted people who played Magic cards!

for the 10thbaziollionath time, colleges want kids who do things- it can be volunteering, music, sports, work, etc

they don't want kids who just hang out

working at In and Out for 2 years is a good thingk, playing video games for two years is not

Does it help even more if the work is during the school year as opposed to the summer?

I did a laundry of Extra-curriculars along with Tennis. Will colleges like Columbia be thrown off over the superfluous amount of extra-curriculars I did....I mean is there a limit 2 much; and on top of that; I did service in my school && things like the AIDS walk 05'..

a Litle Feedback please

bentley,
yes, several books I read state job/work experience is considered a good EC because it shows you are responsible. Especially during school year because it takes time away from you studying. Same as sports, and other ECs. However the added bonus of a job is that it shows you are not from a priviledge background, it seems like a lot of adcoms have more sympathy for a kid holding a job during school year( because the adcoms had to work to earn money while they were teenager). Samething as if you play cello and the adcom that reads your file also plays cello.
