on the common application. why is work experience put into a different category than other ec's? and also, how detrimental is it to not have any work experience if you have other solid ec's?

Work is a whole other ball park than simply volunteering or most other ECs. Also, the common app only allows you a certain amount of spots for ECs. However, along with several ECs, someone may have worked three jobs. Instead of making them fill out the extra form, they gave them another sections solely for work experiance.

work experience is very important in addition to solid ec's and demonstrates a good sense of individuality and self suffiency which college like. In other words not having it may not hurt that much but having it is gonna be a pretty good boost as other solid ecs will be.

ona a simlar note, if my only work has been mowing lawns in the neighborhood, how do i report that?

all work is valued by colleges whether it's bagging at Shoprite or tutoring

You write down "yard work" or "lawn mowing".
The harder the work is, the more colleges tend to value it, so being a lawn mower is something that could make you stand out in a good way in admissions.

thanks for all your responses, when it asks for an employer, should i write self or should i write down the names of all the people whose lawns i worked on?

Write down the names of people whom you worked for. If there isn't enough space for all, just put "etc." when you run out of space. This will make it clear that you weren't getting paid for cutting your family's lawn. :)

I started a pet sitting business in my neighborhood and put "loyal clients" as my employer hee heeee!
