From what I understand by reading articles about UCSB, it's really been stepped up in recent years, especially because the IV Foot Patrol has received major grant money. And $3000 fines are going to scare people too:

The UCSB administration wants to lessen the party stereotype of the school and focus it on academics. On the campus, they have signs commerarating the 5 Nobel Prize winning professors since 1998, and pimping it's engineering department (In terms of percentage of engineering faculty that's part of the National Academy of Engineering, UCSB ranks #2, below Berkeley but above schools like Stanford, Harvard, USC, MIT and Caltech).

Maybe I'm just a party pooper, but I don't mind some of the changes to make it a more prestigious university.

Harvey Mudd College is one of the most academically rigorous and excellent schools in the country, but it also has a really great party scene and social life.

Again, not holy cross. they're really strict. visit and party if you want to know dude. don't listen to people regurgitate things they've read off the princeton review or something.

Moat - thank you for saying what I was saying.

Not Holy Cross, my best friend from high school plays football at Holy Cross and confirms that the social scene sucks and the parties are lame as hell.

Sorry superchica, I could not disagree more. I went to Columbia for a year and I honestly think the biggest party I ever went to at Columbia would be considered a lame to average Dartmouth party. The social scene just isnt there the same way it is at more community oriented schools. Most of the time people just end up going to bars. Sometimes the West End is pretty good, but its often hit or miss, and it really cant compare to other schools where it feels like Mardi Gras every weekend and people are all over the streets. Also, Columbia isn't as open or friendly as other campuses. Many people just hide out in their rooms.

NYC is the definition of intensity and Columbia embodies the city...Columbia is an awesome place for a certain type of student, but laid back it is not...
