"Work Hard, Play Hard" Culture at Colby

Seeking input from current and recent graduates about Colby’s social environment. Have read and heard from various sources (some current students) that there is a lot of drinking and partying at the college on the weekends – that Colby students ‘work hard and play hard’. Being that the campus is “isolated” and Waterville does not have much to offer (that could change w/the redevelopment efforts going on in town), I get that students and the college need to create their own fun. For example, I’ve read that the college often brings in groups/singers, etc.

In any case…Can you share your experience? And for students that are not into the party scene, how do you feel you fit in at Colby? Are you involved in clubs or other things that give you “something to do” on the weekends? What sorts of things? What kind of pressure did/do you feel to participate in the parties? Do you feel like there’s nothing else to do unless you go to the parties? (And yes…I have viewed the Colby Life documentary on youtube)

I know many of you may respond with…“you don’t have to party if you don’t want to” or “everyone has a place to fit in; you don’t need to be a jock or partier”…I get that everyone can/should make their own personal choices. I just want to really understand the social scene.

Also, on a similar note, would love to hear if you have a perspective on athletes (varsity and maybe even intramural/club) – are they clique; more inclusive or exclusive?

Thank you.
