Hey so I'm a transfer student this fall and I already started signing up for some classes. so far I have 10 units equaling to 4 classes. phase II will come out soon and i think I need to pick more classes but im not sure how many more to pick. also Im going to be continuing to work since i need to pay rent, food, and all that. I'm thinking about working 25 hrs a week. I just wanted to ask other students , how many hours they plan on working or also if you arent going to be working and how many units they plan on taking.

Average units is 16, and minimum units to be considered full-time are 13. Take one more class (or two depending on whatever, and you can always drop one before the 5th week). It also depends on your job. The campus has a lot of work-study jobs where students can just sit and swipe cards, and they spend that time studying occasionally.

I worked 12 hours a week (had to commute to SF so waste of 6 hours on top of that…), and I took 18 units, and it was…really not fun. Haha, so you can either take the minimum 13 units since you’re a transfer and you don’t really know what you can and can handle, or you can add a class onto the 13 units and then drop a class/make it P/NP. Make sure you still have 13 units though if you do drop a class.

1 unit is supposed to mean 3 hours of work per week, including both in-class and out-of-class time. In practice, the average is lower, but there is also considerable variation in workload per unit. Courses with labs, art studio, music performance, computer programming assignments, and large term projects tend to be higher workload per unit courses.
