Work in school over summer and get room at 75% off

I got an offer from my school to work over the summer for them. I'd work like 35 hrs a week from mid-May to early-September (about 16 weeks) and the wage could vary from $7.50 to $13 an hr. My boss at workstudy has told me that I can work in the summer as well and I've told her that I will already and usually the pay is like $1 or $2 more than what I get now which is $8/hr.

Here's an extra offering. I could dorm over the summer and if I remain employed and work the 35hrs a week, I can get a 75% discount off summer housing. Do you guys think this is worth it? My guess is that housing is like $6,000 (more or less).

So assuming that I make $9 or $10 an hr that would be $5,040 to $5,600 that I'd make over the summer before taxes.

Would it be worth it to take up the school's offer for summer housing? I realize it's an extra expense that I'd be taking on, but I'm curious to hear what you guys will do. I'm most likely not going to take the offer just because I could use the extra money and I'd just as easily commute to work rather than live on campus.

The one possibility that I've thought of is maybe taking up a class or two over the summer which could justify living on campus, but then again with work during the day I'm not sure how the classes would match up with my work schedule (maybe if they offer night classes; has anyone heard of night classes during the summer?).

Have you checked that price of housing?? $6000 seems like a lot for just the summer...most places are significantly cheaper in the summer, especially for continuing students (students who were enrolled spring term and will be in fall, even if you dont take summer courses). What's your normal housing cost??

Mine next year in an oncampus apartment will be $5400 for 12 mos starting August and i'll be staying this summer for only $700 for 86 days....much less than the school year price. Check that before considering things.

Or you could live at home and commute if you live close by or consider getting a sublease from someone for the summer.

Well room and board is like about $11,630 ($5,815 per semester) at my school. It's going up next year to $12,300. Since I'm not sure what the summers are like I have no idea of judging what the cost of summer housing would be. I figured it'd be something similar to what you pay in the regular year.

Ahh...you included the board in that. That definitely raises the price of staying on campus. What school do you attend? Somewhere on your school's housing site they probably list summer rates. Most schools do have reduced rates in summer though.

i go to fordham uni. i can't find summer rates for whatever reason. maybe i'm just not looking right. i can only see expected tuition for fall and spring semesters at the school site.

If you're planning to take a class over summer to justify staying on campus, don't forget to include the cost of the class in your calculations!

Summer housing costs are usually listed on the Summer School site.
