Work Studies @ Syracuse

does anyone here take part in the work studies program ?

im a freshman at syracuse, and im supposed to be doing a work study, but i havent really gotten the chance to look it up.
im really wondering how it works. does it go in an account to pay for my tuition or do i get the money myself ?

can someone give me the details about how to get a work study ? and recommendations on which work studies are the best would be nice as well.

Go talk to whomever is handling your finaid packet. The money goes straight to tuition. Residence hall desk jobs, Syracuse Stage and groups like Literacy Corps take work study students.

Are you talking about FWS (Federal Work-Study) jobs?
If so, that doesn't go directly toward your tuition. You're given a certain amount of FWS money but that doesn't mean that you "have" to work or that you're "supposed" to take advantage of it. And you get the paycheck named out to you. It can be used for whatever you'd like, but the idea is that it is used towards your education to reduce the cost.

With FWS, you have more employment options, such as the Literacy Corps who only accepts students who have FWS and certain if not all dining halls who require that you have Federal Work-Study (they may still put you on a "waitlist" even if you don't have work study but it's highly unlikely that you'll get the job)

I worked at a dining last year (Brockway) and used up most of my FWS. This year, I applied for Literacy Corps.

Here is the link for workstudy positions available on campus.

Many workstudy positions are fairly flexible so that you can work around your class schedule. For some positions (such as dining or housing desk positions) you can chose how many hours a week you want to work, up to the maximum $$$ amt allowed in WS. As one of the posters indicated, the check is made out to you, just as any paycheck would be.
