My soon to graduate son has qualified for a work study. He’s also been invited to join the jv team at his college (fall sport). No money involved, but he is super excited to be part of the program. This team is going to practice 2-3 times a week with 1 game per week during season with potential to pull up (limited I’m sure). He also has a 3 hour lab 1 night a week. Is a work study during season realistic? Maybe just 4-6 hours a week. I would think most work studies are year long so it might be hard to get one just for spring.
Find out who is responsible for the specific work study assignment. Back in the day, my financial aid package included loans, grants, athletic aid and work study. The coach gave input as to the work study assignment and during competition season my “job” was easy; most hours I “worked” were sitting at a table checking IDs at the entrance to the gym. A job that allowed me to study while on shift. The season I was injured, I had what I would call a real job at the library, shelving books, ugh…I still remember dreading those hours on my feet pushing a cart of books around the building, the assignments at this school were given out each semester.
So find out who and how jobs are assigned to see if it is manageable.
Yes, most athletic departments have control over a lot of work study hours. Working at game, setting up practicing, score keeping, handing out towels at the gym, selling tickets. They are of course very flexible for athletes.
My daughter had a teammate who did have a scholarship and did have work study. She mostly worked the men’s team of the same sport if possible, but they always found something for her to do if the guy were out of town or if their games conflicted.
Of course, he could work in the library on Sunday afternoons or early mornings in the cafeteria.
both of my boys were/are college athletes and both worked a handful of hours a week
coach helped get the job so they were able to work hours that fit perfectly into their schedules
enabled them to have weekly spending money
