Work-study eligibility

I know for the Pell grant there is an EFC ceiling of 4600-ish. But does anyone know what is the maximum EFC to still be elibible for federal work-study? And if a student's EFC is closer to that maximum cut-off would the amount of work-sudy awarded decease incrementally as it does when the EFC gets closer to the cut-off for Pell eligibility?

There is no EFC cut off for WS. It is available if you have ‘need’ as defined by COA less EFC. Individual schools may set their own cut offs as they have limited WS funds to award. At my daughter’s school they award grants, WS then loans. This year she had very little ‘need’ left, just a few hundred dollars (yay SMART grant) after her merit scholarships and grants, so she did not get WS because she did not have unmet need.

Thanks, SCM. I think my D may lose her Pell grant for 2010-11, but I really don’t want to see her lose her workstudy. She loves her job and hopes to keep it next year, but it’s only open to workstudy students. She’ll certainly have need though. For this current academic year she’s already close to the Pell cut-off (and gets a small Pell grant) but next year I’m pretty sure she’ll bob up above that and lose the Pell. Since it’s small amount anyway it’s not going to make a huge difference if she loses it, but it would be most unfortunate if she lost her workstudy. Sounds like she’ll be okay on that front though! Thanks.

Where I work, we do have a cut-off EFC for work study, but even students who meet that cut off don’t always get work study. Our computer packaging system awards it, based on a set list of rules. The really important thing is to apply as early as possible & to submit any requested documentation right away. Work study tends to run out early for us. From what I hear, though, some schools have trouble awarding it all.

Thanks for the heads-up, Kelsmom. I tend to be one of those anal people who gets things in very early anyway, but I’ll certainly make SURE to next year!
