Everyone I've talked to (including counselors at CalSo) have said that I should hold off looking for a work-study job or any job in general until later on in the year when I've become used to college life. I am eager to get a job right when I start school and I was wondering if you all think that's a good idea or if I should wait until I've become more adjusted to my schedule. I do want to do as much workstudy as I can so that I can fill the $4000 the school as given me. Thanks in advance for your advice!

^^^ i have the same question

I wouldnt do that. You should ajust to the whole college life. I waited till my 2nd semester to start working. You can, if you want, change your work study to loans.

I agreed to do work study, and have a quick question. It says I have to do so-and-so amount of work each semester, now, can i decide not work at all the first semester then do all of my work-study for the second?
I think a Calso counselor said i could, but I'm not sure.

Thanks

Yeah, i think you can

Smallz, your work-study total is for the entire year, starting from June through the end of May. In my case, I will have worked off a majority of my work-study earnings this summer alone, even before school starts.

I would say working a reasonable amount of hours (less than 10) might work out if:
* you've listened to some of the advice on these boards, and take a low number of units;
* have previously worked before;
* the job is close to, or on campus;
* actually enjoy your potential job (and not backed into it, like food services).

$4000, even $3000 is a lot to handle for one semester, and ideally you should distribute them across the entire year. I know second semester seems lightyears away and by then you're thinking you'll be mature, veteran students, but in the eyes of 3/4 of the population- you're still freshmen, still have freshmen tendencies, and still are susceptible to the fallibilities of freshmenhood. Yes, there is a difference between first and second semester, but I don't see any harm in starting to search for good work-study positions at this point.

Best of luck,
TTG

will there be enough work and jobs listed in the middle of semester? i don't want to go right into work and be overwhelmed.

I have about 1500 currently for work study....I might be waiting till second semester.

My work study is a goddamned $3530. No doubt I will have to convert some of it to loans.

The overall quality and amount of jobs tend to drop in the middle of semesters, but there's usually always new jobs being added. As the second semester begins, there is generally a spike in the number of jobs available, as students from first semester leave the position are new ones for the Spring are added. I have never seen less than 60-80 jobs listed on their website, and that's not taking into consideration the amount of positions open per job.

I would advise for those who aren't planning to apply for work-study immediately to check into their website weekly to see what new jobs are added; this can be easily tracked by sorting the listings by date added. This will allow you to get a better sense of what jobs are to be had through the work-study program, so that you have a reasonable idea as to what you'll eventually be applying for when the time comes.

Best of luck,
TTG

I've been working since my freshmen year in September. It taught me to manage my time very well, and I do feel confident and feel good that I am getting things done early (learned NOT to procrastinate, mainly because I don't have time to do so, but still have time for fun fun fun afterwards).

It's greeeat. Being a college student with money is good. Really good (and not have to borrow/ask from parents!).

I have a small question about the work study...

If I were to decide to start workstudy second semester because of all the getting-adjusted-to-college issue but ended up not working off the whole $4,000 I was supposed to?

Will the remainder convert to loans or "roll over" to next year if they give me workstudy again?

Thanks in advance guys.
