Ok so today I talked with our job counselor at school and I have a work study job lined up. Basically all I am waiting on is my background check to come through. If it does (and it should) come out good I have the job. Its not a glamorous job (janitorial) but is pretty easy. They said I could get as many hours up to 20 a week that I want. I might do 16 a week this month (May) and drop to 12 this summer.

Anyways I was wondering how much money I can make on this? I know it pays 7.00 an hour.

Do I claim this on my 10-11 Fafsa?

Do I claim this one my income tax?

How often do we get paid? Is it in the form of a check? And can I get it direct deposited?

If it matters this school session I did not get the full Pell amount, starting next school session (Fall) I will.

Thanks.

If it is WS the amount you can earn should be listed on financial aid award letter. If it lists $2000 than you can earn a maximum of $2000 as WS.

You need to ask whether the summer WS counts as part of next years financial aid or is part of last years. You are lucky you can get WS for the summer session. At my daughter’s school there is no summer work study and any WS award not earned by the last day of the summer semester is lost (though that is not an issue this year as she will have earned exactly her award this week and it is finals next week. Last year she did not earn anywhere near her award because her job was related to a prof’s research and the research kept being delayed. When it finally got the green light the semester was over).

Yes WS income is taxable income for both federal and State taxes. If your total earned income income is over the personal exemption (it was @ $5400 for 2008) then you will have to do a tax return and the WS income is reported as income. Even if you do not earn over the exemption you should file if you had any taxes deducted to get them refunded.

It depends. If you earned enough to file a tax return the the WS income will be included in your AGI from your tax return that is reported on FAFSA. In that case you should make sure you include it in the question where it asks about WS that is included in the AGI. This is so that the WS income will be deducted from your income before the EFC is calculated. WS earnings are not held against you in the EFC calculation.

Ask your school. My daughter is paid every other week and has her check direct deposited in her bank account. This may vary at different schools.

I go to a community college so there is not real award letter. I finish up all the paperwork Thursday so I will ask them then.
